Watch this space though, as I'm around 7am on day 4, so I'm not too far away from the final missions from what I remember. As several people have asked about the final missions, I'm planning to run through them once to refresh myself, then create videos for them. Perhaps after that I'll create videos for all scripted missions, and maybe the basic mission types too (CAP, airfield denial, ship kill, etc.), but these will take a long time if I decide to do them.
Bad news first - I installed the patch, started again, and I had the same problem. Good news - I got so frustrated with them not landing that I decided to use unguided weapons and deliberately miss most of the sea skimmers and hovercraft. Finally this allowed the invasion force to land, though only four sectors. I thought I had deliberately missed the invasion force when playing on Vista before, but perhaps not. Anyway I'll try missing even more next time and see if they gain more sectors.
@routhoula I didn't even know there was a patch. As my joystick doesn't work with it anyway, I might as well give it a try. It's a shame that all the info I can find on it says "fixes a number of problems that have been found in the game", rather than listing specifics. If it makes the campaign actually work on Vista I'll be happy though. I can only hope.
@routhoula Just downloaded a patch that contains a second file (typhoon_registry_fix.exe). When opening, it says:
"You only need to run this file if you have installed the latest Typhoon patch and selected Yes to install the registry entries and found that your joystick still doesn't work."
So if you haven't tried installing that registry fix yet, it may get your X52 to work with it again.
@clerlic I also had this problem - my sidewinder controller used to have software for key binding, but it lost support with Vista. I found an app called Xpadder, which allows you to add your own bindings. However, even that doesn't seem to stop the first two buttons from being assigned to fire weapons, but at least it allows you to use the rest of the buttons on your controller as you want them.
@blackeagle041 Unfortunately ever since I have run it on Vista, the invasion force never lands, so the campaign crashes out eventually at one of the scripted events, so I can't really do a decent walk through just from memory. However, if you have the Operation Icebreaker expansion, they provide an extensive strategy guide in the installation folder. If you don't have it, message me your email address and I should be able to send over the guide.
@spppps You can take them out, but as guided missiles don't track you have to use unguided ordnance. I used to select a bunch of rocket pods as these are fairly accurate if you get into guns range, using your wingman (once he's used all his missiles up so goes in with guns too) to try and draw fire. Then once you're out of rockets, use the guns. After using a few of your pilots you should be able to do it (it's pretty easy to have a few shot down in the process though).
@TheDarkomaani I'm not aware of any mods myself, unfortunately. I don't think the game was popular enough, and perhaps not accessible enough for anyone to have created any. If you do find any though, be sure to let us know :-)
@demolition09 Special aircraft that appear in the campaign can also be used if you work out the names, like I once used the SR-71 and flew it to the edge of the playable world for the fun of it, because it has a large fuel load. The Su-47 and the Typhoon MkII you find at the end of the campaign can also be used, and they have a faster turn rate than the standard Typhoon. I can't remember their exact names though, especially as the Su-47 might have been called the S-37 in game.
@TheDarkomaani One tip I do have though, is if you include the name of an aircraft that appears in the game in you profile name, you can use it in the multiplayer modes (excluding co-op). For example, if you name your profile " Su-27m ", the external view of the aircraft will be that of the Su-27. Different aircraft have different turn rates too using this method. If you have the game manual, you can view all the names on page 47, and it lists their relative turn rates ("very fast" to "slow")
@1996enzoferrari I'm still on an old Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2. I would like to get something with a separate throttle but my main problem is money and that I don't play flight games enough at the moment.
@XcopeS Yeah I played the demo of the first HAWX game, and I didn't really like the flight mechanics. I can manage with arcade stuff like Ace Combat, but when they start changing the flight mechanics I'm not so happy.
@demolition09 Yeah, I know what you are talking about. Also, do you know where I can get this game? I have an old original CD but it's...old so it doesn't work anymore, so, since I bought it already,I don't mind getting a somewhat less-than-legal game, if you know what I mean... And great video btw.
@XcopeS Not sure really, you'd have to look around on-line for a torrent or the likes, but I'm not sure how successful that will be considering the game isn't particularly popular.
@Th3UnD3TaK3r Mine worked fine in general on Vista, I think with the compatibility mode on XP (I don't have the game installed at the moment). The main problem is that the campaign has never worked properly on Vista for me. The invasion force never lands, running me into boring missions doing next to nothing, and when it gets to a scripted mission which relies on an enemy sector being present (like the B1 bomber mission), it crashes and that's that. The Operation Icebreaker campaign works though
@demolition09 Yea I had quite the same on vista, the invasion force never landed because I killed them.
Now on XP they randomly appear on the ground although I successfully finished the invading missons and the stupid ground forces are not able to recapture one single fucking sector, although you finish the inderdiction missions etc.
@Th3UnD3TaK3r I think they will always land a few sectors no matter what if the game is working properly. When I played first time, because I didn't work out all the missions, they landed several sectors then kept building until a few days in where I only had maybe 10 sectors left in the corner and the counter invasion force lands (providing you stop all the bombers and cruise missiles attacking them). Then you battle them back to having pretty much no sectors until the final bomber missions.
@Th3UnD3TaK3r However when I got the Operation Icebreaker expansion pack and read the strategy guide, I followed the suggestions for the beginning like attacking container ships. So with those hover transports I took them all out with cannon, then went to high altitude with laser bombs to attack container ships. After that, I used every mission opportunity I could to attack container ships. I think they only landed three sectors in the end and hardly got anymore over the whole campaign.
@shawnhbkdx90 A joystick. But without one I never got used to the mouse, so just used the keys. Since they're on-and-off you'll find points where you have to tap them rapidly rather than simply hold them, but I found that easier than trying to get the mouse in the right position with such a sensitive reaction. A joystick really will beat both though, unless it's extremely poor quality.
That is so true. Looks like the Typhoon is getting massively public now. The IR screen is good. I hope he goes up an F22 to show just how easy it is to detect IR signature from a great distance.
...escort missions \ bombing ground targets \ destroying submarines\ships \ air fights .... takeoff and landing...basicaly free run - pick missions what you like with different pilots.
sick game.
so much stuff, many new flight games just suck by comparison.
@kisharsenal If your target is turning, you usually want to drop to around 400-500 knots to get a reasonably tight and sustainable turn rate. Even with an empty weapons load you'll still want 100% engine power or more to keep reasonable energy. Remember, the more power you have, the more you can use the air-break without losing as much energy. Come in from behind, trying to keep your angle to the target fairly shallow so you're not shooting right across it.
[continued] Try and move the joystick smoothly to get into position, lining up the middle of the gun reticule with your target, whilst using the throttle and/or air-break to change your speed as necessary to keep a good angle and closing rate (turning as hard as possible for short periods will also lose you speed quickly). Once you start to get into range, the solid line around the reticule will retract, leaving dots. Let it get half way down or less before taking a shot for the best accuracy.
[continued] Finally, once you are getting into range and have the reticule over your target (or just in front), take the shot. Take short bursts when your reticule is in place. If the shots miss, adjust your angle of attack according, and fire another short burst until you hit. Just because your target is smoking doesn't mean it's down, but the game is handy in letting you know because a downed target goes into a spin (also, if you cycle targets, you'll no longer be able to select that one).
@kisharsenal Oh, a few more things. You may want to get into the cockpit-less view as I used at 5:10, so the cockpit doesn't obstruct your view as much. You could also try turning off G effects so your screen doesn't black out during the high G turns, also giving you a better view of your target at all times.
@kisharsenal for using canon u have to use traditional dogfight tactics, meaning 1- get on his ass 2- get really close(100-200, tops 300 metres) and then shoot!
Ive been looking for this game for a long time now... i hope this is the one that Rage Software made. Now I somehow found it installed it, but it wont work now on WinXp Sp3 with Ati X300 128 Mb... last time when I left this game incomplete , I guess I was on Win2000 Sp2 on 32 Mb graphics card way back.. could I have downloaded a corupt copy or can somebody tell me where to find it?
Yeah, the bombers at the end were annoying. As missiles wouldn't lock on, I found rockets quite useful; yes you have to predict how much they'll drop in the distance, but once you get the hang of it they do quite a lot of damage. Also, sending in your wingman just before attacking yourself can help, as they divert some of the automatic turret fire away from you.
Yeah, I decided the video would be too boring without music, and I couldn't find anything much I'd pair with flying at first, but then I remembered Ace Combat 6 so I thought I'd choose whichever mission music I could find around the right length :P
@XinumYothZeram I can't send it to you because its too big (more than one GB) but i can upload it somewhere...Just give me a name of a good site with fast upload speed (my comp is very very very very very fast and good so there won't be a time problem)
