@gagankaa Hi I'm Noel de Castro Mauricio from Philippines . I make Mini Hydro turbine from scrap materials . look at the pictures and some video of my latest mini hydro it gives 2kv power output . at my facebook wall
The Archimedes "hydrodynamic screw" is very efficient. Zotloterer Gravitational Vortex is probably a little less efficient but fish can swim through it up and down and it is probably cheaper to build too. Perhaps your site is too high for it? Is there any way you could use the power directly? Either to run machinery or to heat something?
The electrical stuff is really expensive and You get charged big bux to connect to the grid.
I have a similar set up with about the same water flow, however my dam is a bit wider and I would like the keep the appearance of it. Have you installed anything yet as to give me some advice here. It would be nice to find a system that would operate as efficient as possible yet still retain the aesthetics. I have just repaired the dam by installing a new PVC drain pipe and the front rock was sprayed with shot creek. I plan to go forward with this as long as TVA is still buying power.
pipe the water through a large peace of pvc at the end glue on a street T pointing down,,, into another pvc pip open at the bottom . Now back to the street elbow ... you will take an alternator off a car , and install a long rod and propeller on it .. as long as you can get for the fall of water. insert the prop down into the pvc ,, you will fasten the generator inside another piece of pvc capped at the top hook it up to some batteries ,, u can modify gm alternators to produce more also
so there are new turbine types invented in austia a few years ago that would fit quiet well and as a matter of fact if you dont mind loosing a few % of efficiency you can do most of it yourself here. The page from the guy who invented it zotloeterer(dot)com
Put a 6"/8" pipe into the water stream and run it downhill as far as you can. Neck the pipe down at the lowest point. Run the water into a centrifugal pump outlet housing (run the pump backwards) and use the shaft of the pump to drive your generator. Regulate the RPM with a gate valve at the bottom to 1800 RPM or 3600 RPM ( =60 cycle power). Direct the water from the inlet back into the creek. Have fun!
Preferably, get or fabricate a turbine with curved blades, just look at industrial turbines for a bearing on it, DO NOT build a simple water wheel type thing, it will reduce efficiency by like 50%.
Get a generator, alternator, and the part I do not know much about, you will have to get gears to kind of slow the real RPM's on the turbine, lol, crappy visualization, but its in words.
And then get an electrician to wire it to home and start selling electricity!
At low heights and low angles they produce more Watts and power than any water wheel not to mention there also fish friendly (fish ladder) and more efficient
there is many things you can do. You can try and made a homemade hydro generator, but if you did that you would have to regulate the flow of water to it. Or you can buy a hydro generator and go "off grid" (which is not using any electricity from any power plants) there are not cheap it is like a $10,000 hole in your pocket, but in the long term use of it it would work and you would get re imbursted because of the money you save from paying for electricity. I could go on and on with this.....
If you havent got any answers yet, maby start with a pipe where the water goes over the water fall, maby so that you dont have to work so close to it. Maby direct the water 20 feet or so downstream a bit. Maby tap about 30% of that for a small project, maby 100W. Or some waterwheel is possible like I see in the video response.
You have plenty of flow there. Looks like a good spot for a low head/high flow water-wheel type generator. You wont be able to build up pressure on that fall because of the lack of head. But the flow does have inherent power to it, so you should be able to drive a geared generator from an overshot water wheel, if you have the space to place it under the fall. Alternatively, look into crossflow turbines for this kind of application.
You know I really wonder if a Archimedes screw would work well here.
Do a youtube search on these three key words and see what others are doing, or go to my profile and look a bunch of the videos I have saved as favorities:
these alternators produce huge amounts of power at low rpms, max power with a 3kw one I have comes at just 350 rpm. these may cost more but if you want serious power you don't need the latest fancy turbine design that costs loads, get one of these alternators. you get them from 1.5 kw I think to 6.5 kw on ebay but the company that makes them make much larger ones. My 3kw works on a pinched river system with an undershot waterwheel which as some would know is not expensive or the most efficient.
word of advice for any of you interested in this, after building numerous hydro generators of different designs, whatever turbine or waterwheel you use is up to you and depends obviously on the location etc, however you can get good power from any design you have to use the right generator. most people use either a car alternator or something similar, very high rpms and inefficient. go find alternators made for wind turbines, you find them on ebay, usually black. they use rare earth magnets .
You havn't reposted your findings? Did you check on the flow rate and fall. As I said you should be able to produce 4KW>6KW=4000>6000 watts, good enough for most home needs. Water wheels convert
We will be installing a mini-hydroelectric device this winter in Manitou Springs, Colorado Spring that will convert the energy of moving water to electricity.
omg that is a dream cime true. what a beautiful place and pond. Mother Earth News and there are some books on the subject. You could go turbine, impellor, water wheel. You could do anything with that much water.
On YouTube see "River Dart County Park LTD Premier SME BCE Awards 2009", "Turning Green in Oxford, England", "Archimedes Screw", "Hydro-Dynamic screw".
This may be the best type for your micro hydro power plant.
How many feets does the water fall drop? Dude, I think you could generate a lot of power from this waterfall, the danger is developing more power than you need... If the dam. Good luck, try and find some experts on the subject matter. I think you will need an expert to help determine how much power you can generate from this fall. I am no expert but you could get generate quite a lot. Do a lot of research...
Unless the people that are telling you how much power you will get know the actual flow and head you are getting a lot of bad numbers. You may have alread have figured this out but you need an accurate flow rate and accurate drop of the water. Guessing the amount of fall I would say a kaplan, francis, of banki turbine. Forget big water wheels. The gearing to get the speed up to reasonable priced generators will waste a great amount of power in friction loss.
Great for a small off grid unit. Amount of power will be limited to 4kw > 6kw depending on the amount of money and time you want to spend. Using a undershot simple 6>7foot wheel, chain drive with "ST-AC low speed generator" feeding your controler in the house which is all low maintance. You won't have to worry about obstructions or cleaning, just ice buildup. Good luck, keep us posted!
mik22pik, what does 4kw to 6kw actually translate into. Can you give an idea on how much elec it would mean for a normal American household's use? Thanks!
work best and handles even dirt, like fallen leaf or small twigs, and other dirts coming with flowing water...
A Wheel with poncelet or Zuppinger design will do fine and provide enough power, as it will only need to have a by-pass, which easly can be installed, and a pocelet flume which provides the correct seat for the waterwheel.
Next two bearings, gears, generator and whaterwhell..
With water flow like that I would run it over a wheel. But it is not going to spin fast so you will have to use a low speep flux altinator like they use in wind mills. The amount of water flow you have now will be like a 40mph wind on a windmill with the right wheel in the water flow. The other thing is how far are you away from that spot. DC power does not travel well. It takes huge wire size for long distances to carry any amp supply. Perhaps you can keep it in the 3 phase to your site.
Above all else you first need to measure head and flow. See Canyon hydro's website for a tutorial on how to do this...will be especially easy to calculate at your site. No doubt a Banki type crossflow turbine (see also Ossberger, Mitchell) will be the ticket. You'll need to make up a gate at your outflow, you'll need to put in a penstock and inflow, pour a small concrete pad below the dam and construct a small tailrace. Not too much to do, you already have the hard work done. Forget waterwheels.
I envy you, put a flexible hose in the pond until it fills with water, cover one end and drag it in the direction of the stream. Effectively you syphon the pond off with a hose. Go as low as you can with the discharging end of the hose and feel the power. Get an idea of the rate of flow of the water in litres per second. Look forward to wet weather, relish the shift in energy dependence, the world is your osyster.
Make a duct for the wate, then almost at low side water level put an old pump turbine. Then connect that axle with the one from a car alternator. Conect the alternator to some bateries an put an inverter 12V/220V or watever your country use. Easy 2 day's work at the most.

No No No, ditch the Archimedes
You want power!!
You will have to loose your water fall because of this but lol.
Measure the approximate rate at which the water flows through that waterfall.
Get a pipe that will take almost exactly that much watter, give or take a few because these calculus crap calculations are always estimations.
Basically, its hard for me to describe.
At the end of the pipe, build a plastic cage for your turbine. So the water moves in line with the circular movement

I would suggest a paddle wheel of some description as you don't seem to have a lot of fall, but there seems to be plenty of flow.
You could certainly generate something, that's for sure!
Keep looking through the videos here....there's some great ideas & set ups.

A Poncelet Wheel would be better than a simple paddle wheel, however as has already been noted above some form of small turbine would be better yet.
