Look at the size of the ring. In a ring that small....against Marcel Cerdan....you don't have a snowballs chance in hell of winning. I don't care WHO you are. LOL! That poor nazi bastard!
i heard that prior to the bell that cerdan said to his trainer,"watch,i'm going to knock this bum down with my first punch". but,of course he said it in french.
8 knockdowns under 1:30! More than entire famous Dempsey=Firpo 1st round.
And yes, why no neutral corner? Why didn't Ferrer stay down until the 9 count? Especially, why did Cerdan fight in Nazi occupied Paris? Did the French hold it against him after the war?
I guess their was no rule in this fight about going into the neutral corner. Remember this fight was taking place in Paris in 42, which was occupied by the Nazis.
I don't think Ferrer was tough. Everything Marcel hit him with put him down, and he didn't have the ring sense, which you can develop in the gym, to stay down long enough to clear his head. A rough count of the knockdowns is this: 1st (at 15 sec): 1.5 sec 2nd 0.5 sec 3rd 1 sec 4th 1 sec 5th 1.5 sec 6th 0.5 sec (a total of 6 sec for 6 knockdowns) 7th 9sec 8th 6 sec 8 knockdowns; 21 sec down in total. Last knockdown was at 1.15 round one. 8 knockdowns in one minute.
There's a really funny side to this. This fight was for the European welterweight title. Ferrer's previous record was one fight for one win by KO in the ninth round.
So how did he get to fight for the EBU title in his 2nd fight?
Did he fight someone great, someone who'd had 20 or 50 fights with no or few losses?
Ferrer's previous fight was against Pedro Isasti, from Spain. Isasti had had one previous fight, a points loss to someone named Johnson, who had not fought before, nor did again.
Try to understand, it was during WWII and most of fighters were at war. Marcel Cerdan was Moroccan but fought as "French". At the time a lot of fights were rigged... Sounds familiar?
@differentvibes First of all at that time North Africa was officially part of france, so he did not fight as "French", he was French. Do you have any proof that his fights were rigged?
@beargrizly67 According to what I read Marcel was born and lived in Algier, and Algier was a part of France. And he was a French citizen. As to being naive... I believe, naive are those people who believe various "conspiracy theories".
What an awful referee...he should have stopped the fight 30 seconds in...anyone could see Mr. Ferrer had lotsa heart but was NO MATCH for the Piaf's hubby.
From all the fights I've seen of Cerdan, he was an outstanding boxer - one of the best IMO. He lost the fight to La Motta because he damaged his shoulder. He was a far superior boxer to La Motta in spite of what the record says. It would have been great to see him against Robinson.
@flashingswords- It's amazing that the referre: 1) never gave Ferrer a full 10 count, and 2) that he would make him fight after the 3rd K.O. ... did anyone doubt what the result was going to be after K.O #2?... Honestly, for training purpose, we should make the referee fight Cerdan and have Jose Ferrer referee le fight! ....
@Snako85 Both Cerdan & LaMotta was great fighters but to say they are both better than Robinson is laughable. i suggest you watch St.Valentines Day Massacre between Robinson v LaMotta. Cerdan was an incredible fighter and its a shame his untimely death robbed us the boxing fans of seeing his championship years.
LOL. And Max Baer might have been a better actor if he hadn't had his brains scrambled while boxing. All he could play was dummies like Jethro on The Beverly Hillbillies.

Why didn't the ref make Cerdan go to a neutral corner after each knock down? Dempsey lost to Tunney in '27 for the very same thing. Strange.

Ferrer just could not fight.

Oh, by the way, Ferrer did win, somehow, against Isasti. He knocked him out in 9.

@beargrizly67 - Morocco has never been French but France offered military protection to Morocco after Portugal tried to invade them.
Algeria & Tunisia were the only French colonies i N. Africa.
As far as rigged fights... I believe you are naive.
