How much of a hero would you be if you had a spare wheel for one of those guys? I'm kind of surprised more fans don't carry a spare to the Paris-Roubaix; you know someone's gonna get a flat. If they flat near where you're watching the race from, you could just hand 'em your spare wheel. Assuming it's the right type of course...
@RedShipsofSpainAgain In fact, many fans do, they bring their best pair, put name and phone number on them, and if they give a wheel to a pro, they'll get a new wheel as a token of appreciation. Or, so the story goes...
They mostly get flats in the rear. What if your wheel doesn't have the correct amount of gears (10 or 11 speed now)? If the gears jump up and down or get completely blocked, or if the brake pads aren't correctly aligned on the rim, any rider will stop 100 metre from where you gave him your precious wheel and throw it somewhere in the shoulder next to the road.
Look at :30 -- is Museeuw on one of those weird Paris-Roubaix suspension bikes riders were trying out for a couple of years in the mid-90s? God that's ugly . . .
It was a full suspension Bianchi. It broke during the race and when he tried to change bikes he couldn't get his feet out of the Diadora pedals. His mechanic had to twist Museeuw's feet out of the pedals with his hands!
Pour moi L'Edition des 20 dernieres années! Conditions météo dantesques, vainqueur superbe. Pour arriver a Roubaix de jour là, il fallait "y être": chapeau!
Tchmil was great! I remember him during his escape from the peloton , jumping over a roundabout in the middle of a crossroad! Hi was pushing so hard, head down and he could not put on the brakes, so.....he jumped it!
Just 48 finished out of 191. Tchmil won in 7hrs 28mins. Compare that to Boonen's 5hrs 59mins in the dry this year. That shows how difficult this edition of the race was. OK, I know the course is 5km shorter these days, however there is about 2km more pavé now. I remember seeing the haunted faces of those finishers riding into Roubaix. Shattered.
Anyone who finished that day really did deserve a medal.
It was bitter. I was by the side of the road that day. In the morning the heavy rain turned to snow, until eventually the sun came out, but later in the day it was heavy rain again.

Duffield is the most idiotic commentator to ever get behind the mic. Only Paul Sherwin is as full of moronic, factually inaccurate cliches and mis-information

I have the DVD. Tchmil wins it. Many guys were using suspension forks in this race, and Museeuw used a full-suspension bike.

Worst Paris-Roubaix conditions ever, and maybe the best race ever. Incredible drama. This race needs to be remastered and released on DVD.

Don't like Duffield? You need to come over to the US and be forced to listen to Al Trautwig and Bob Roll blather on for a few hours.

I'll take bob roll over duffers..but he was funny that day.. he lost his voice from having to commentate on the drama
the entire race from km 0 was live...
