Why are we comparing metal/rock with hiphop/rap? Sure they're all "Drum solos", but they have their own feel. ?uestlove, Neil Peart, and Lars Ulrich are all respectable drummers, but you can't quite compare them all to each other.
Chris "Daddy" Dave is one of the best drummers out there and he gives Quest a run for his money. Chris was a protege of Stokley Williams, who is the lead singer from the band Mint Condition.
Ok, every one says hes gotta stick with the beat, but solos dont always have to be about filling in every 32nd note. like listening to neil pert solo is cool for a while, but i could listen to a laid back solo with melodic phrasing alll fuckin day.
hey ?uestlove is God but hes not the best drummer ever...neil pearts great buddy rich is great keith moon john bonham mitch mitchell etc etc...but they all are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! ?uestlove is definelty great and is one of the best (definetly in hip hop) but there are other good drummers and u shud recognize that btw lars ulrich sucks and cant keep a beat for shit. look up buddy rich PEACE
The misunderstanding that a solo implies a ton of ridiculous bullshit is just flat out dumb. If you're not impressed with his solo, listen to his groove, where he kicks Neil Pert's ass.
some people might say this solo isnt that good, but you gotta give it to him, on his tracks, hes got great groove and feel. which as a drummer is more important because thats what gets you gigs
The fact that these two dudes are communicating so well and play stuff that is cohesive together is really cool. Without a doubt, that is the best thing to me about this solo: musical interaction.
One of the most solid time keepers in the business. Simple but effective. Respect for someone who's just all about layin down a beat. A lot of people could learn from this fellow and his "straight" approach. Stewart Copeland used to say that he loved nothing more than to spend half an hour playing a simple 4/4.
That's what drumming is all about. Nevermind all the other stuff. Most drummers fail at the first lesson: Keeping Time. Peace
@isiah1977 HELL YEAH BRO! Right after John Bonham, id say Questlove is my favorite drummer! Lets not forget about Mitch from the Jimi Hendrix Experience! xD
@Skip2731 mitch is so underated "everyone" (aka not true music fans) is just like oh my god jimi hendrix is amazing and dont even know who was in his band and all..i wont lie though noel redding wasnt very creative on bass but he wasnt a bass player anyway...
@traverd well it could be, only drums and maybe cymbals (drum linked) are being played, so it is a 'solo of the drums' - it could also be a drummer solo as only drummers are playing, so it is the 'solo of the drummers', but it could not be a drummer's solo as that would imply only one drummer is there. so if you want to get technical, it could actually be classed a drum solo.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You crazy,Quest is so garbage,if you think that's awesome you should look up a Niel Peart,Carter Beuford, or Omar Hakim solo,THEY can drum. What Quest did, anybody can do without training.
You fuckin right NEIL PEART and everybody else I mentioned! Go and search their drum solo's and I do mean SOLO and tell me Quest is half as good as these dudes. That was wack, I used to play drums myself and that wasn't impressive coming from a "professional" drummer. It was dull and you know it.
That sure is a dumb argument...Neil Peart is still an active drummer; Rush put an album out last year, and are recording one right now. Besides, Peart has been active since the late 60s. What a strange thing to say.
@rubberrev0lver@rubberrev0lver I don't think that enjoying good music that happens to have been produced ten, twenty, thirty...hell, A HUNDRED and thirty years ago is getting high on nostalgia. It implies that someone realises that music doesn't have an expiry date.
Go too a roots concert or listen to one of their old live albums the listen to blackthought spitten and quest completely keeping steady and actually getting into it
He gets into it
the roots aren't commercial
He gets the beat goes with it then changes it up perfectly on his solos
@vFriitZv roots started out prettty underground yes. but im sorry, if youre jimmy fallons house band, yes youve gone commercial... i mean, they are the segue into actual commercials
@sadetwizelve dude, you're fucking garbage. that's why you "use" to play drums yourself. you suck. and you can't do the shit quest is doin. neil is a great drummer. one of the best prgressive rock, but he doesnt get into it. he's lame, and boring. drums are an instrument that takes heart to play, and he dont got it. quest is the shit. if you want to judge what other people think is good, maybe you should start drumming again and post your own videos up. then we'll see...
Bro, I used to love peart untill my teacher pointed out that his technique was wack and that he chokes his drum. If you watch rush in rio, its all crap. His stick grip is real tight and his drums sound dead. Quest is where its at!
And Neil Peart doesn't hold a candle to Buddy Rich, Bill Bruford, or Ginger Baker. I'm tired of people fellating him. Peart is not NEARLY the god he's made out to be.
Anyway, this is such a well constructed solo, and the Roots fans aren't knuckledragging neanderthals.
@acorn9345678 technically he may be, but being technically good doesn't make you a 'good' drummer, it means you've practiced to the point of almost being a machine. being a 'good' drummer is more rooted in feel; whilst technique aids your ability to pull off a feel, it does not give you good feel by default. as such, peart is not a good drummer as he neglects creating a good feel and properly utilising his techniqe. ?uestlove on the other hand has no interest in fancy technique and showing off..
@andylaw31 but instead he plays simple, great feeling music - his musicality is far greater than pearts. ?uestlove does have great technique, he just doesn't construct music as if it is an exercise, or something to show off your skills - he constructs music to create something which sounds good, which is essentially the whole point of music.
