With pitches like that and leather balls that weighed a ton when wet, only players of that era like Stanley Mathews who had the skills could control the ball. Today's players would be writhing in agony as the ball would be too heavy for them.
This field is a disgrace!! its no wonder the english style of playing is to boot the ball in the air....I would too with these conditions. To think a wizard like Sir Stanley had to play on those type of pitches which are a great disservice to the man.
@chemmo10 he was great player but messi is realy good and have 22, you must wait, and messi is followed by 4 players in finals stanley only for one, was another time, anyway great players can play in everytime.
Yeah, the real winger's winger, fantastic acceleration, great w/the ball at his feet, and SUCH vision. I love it when people who never saw him play spout shite like Sir Stan wouldn't make the cut in the modern EPL. Stan would run RIOT in the modern games, just watch some of his vids.
wki stan he such a great man and footballer those were the glory days for stoke and england 10-0 against porgigal 7-2 against scotland stan we salute you
@saab900se the one at 0:09 would probably be a red card nowadays. at least if the player in possession was from united and the referee was howard webb.
not reall at his best to be fair to the man he was a better player in his prime as by the late 50's he lost his place in the england team.but a legend in his prime.
Saw Stan play a few times for England at Windsor Park and as usual was brilliant ,think it was 54,55 they beat N.I. 1-0 and Matthews scored the only goal.
This must have been the end of the season and yet the pitch is a disgrace, amazing that Mathews could play at his age in an era of agricultural tackling (and pitches). Good luck Stoke, see you at Spurs next year.
It's amazing how ageless he was when he picked up that through-ball like he was half his age (he was around 46 when he played that match, I think). What a great athlete.
What a beautiful moment. It brought tears to my eyes. If only football could return to its working class roots and be the peoples game again! Sir Stanley Matthews - Forever a Legend!
@bennyharrisuk But that era doesn't exist anymore, think of the poverty then as opposed to now,it's just a different world now and football reflects that.Wish they'd cut the prices nowadays mind.
my father took to me to cardiff city [schoolboy enclosure]to see the great Sir Stan.this is an era when fans could stand together, without any trouble.
RIP from England

@tine214: Too true, plus Stan could get past nearly any marker w/the ball at his feet IMHO.

The Argie only runs and shoots. He lacks the vision and passing ability of one Sir Stanley Matthews!

Look at that tackle at 0:22. Imagine how to-day's prima-donnass would go down and stay down for the free kick.
