  • RIP from England

  • great days..when the players KNEW their fans

  • what a goal by Stanley Matthews

  • @tine214: Too true, plus Stan could get past nearly any marker w/the ball at his feet IMHO.

  • Amazing stuff. He gets taken out "cold blooded" & gets up to score the winner.....@ age 48!

  • @777i2i ..OVER PAID CELEBRITIES...WHO ONLY PLAY HALF A SEASON..AND WOULDNT HOLD A CONVERSATION WITH THE FANS...STAN DID

  • @777i2i NOTHING FANCY...THATS HOW IT WAS...AND A HEAVY BALL TOO...NO BIG WAGES...JUST THE LOVE OF THE GAME

  • Best English player of all time.. and imo behind only Pele in terms of greatness.

  • With pitches like that and leather balls that weighed a ton when wet, only players of that era like Stanley Mathews who had the skills could control the ball. Today's players would be writhing in agony as the ball would be too heavy for them.

  • This field is a disgrace!! its no wonder the english style of playing is to boot the ball in the air....I would too with these conditions. To think a wizard like Sir Stanley had to play on those type of pitches which are a great disservice to the man.

  • haha the pitch is a discrace

  • Thats our Sir Stan xx

  • "Old" Stan still weaving his magic. Played until he was fifty years of age!

  • That pitch is a swamp. I'm amazed by the fact Matthews could still show his skill on it.

  • Legend.

  • pitch looks like anfield

  • Matthews > Messi by far!

The Argie only runs and shoots. He lacks the vision and passing ability of one Sir Stanley Matthews!

  • @chemmo10 he was great player but messi is realy good and have 22, you must wait, and messi is followed by 4 players in finals stanley only for one, was another time, anyway great players can play in everytime.

  • Stanley Matthews as Amedeo Biavati...simply...champions!!!...football history...

  • The greatest among the greatest in a time that football was football

  • Stan the man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeah, the real winger's winger, fantastic acceleration, great w/the ball at his feet, and SUCH vision. I love it when people who never saw him play spout shite like Sir Stan wouldn't make the cut in the modern EPL. Stan would run RIOT in the modern games, just watch some of his vids.

  • the grate Sir Stan Matthews! he played until he got 50 years old awesome!

  • he was recalled to the englan squad at 44 yrs old and scored 4 goals in an international

  • wki stan he such a great man and footballer those were the glory days for stoke and england 10-0 against porgigal 7-2 against scotland stan we salute you

  • Look at the condition of that pitch!

  • we love a good pitch invasion

  • Look at that tackle at 0:22. Imagine how to-day's prima-donnass would go down and stay down for the free kick.

  • @saab900se the one at 0:09 would probably be a red card nowadays. at least if the player in possession was from united and the referee was howard webb.

  • Wow, I wish I was alive at this time - I'd have loved to be at a game like this..before health and safety went crazy! :P

  • brilliant player and a gentleman, i happen to have a letter and signed photo from him addressed to me on my wall :)

  • A true Stoke City legend .

  • Wish Sir Stan could have seen us win today. Goarrn you Potters!

  • look at that pitch! do u think ronaldo could be as good playing on a surface like that? i don't think so

  • " SIr Stan showed the world how football SHOULD be played" Pele' .

  • Shame there isn't enough footage of the great man.

  • Incredible stuff from the sixties... Hard to beleive it is Mathews... unrecognizable without the close ups... Not a day to do a Mathews- dribble...!

  • Amazing how the old man worked wonders on such muddy pitches.

    Brilliant vid!

  • He is great!

  • Blessed I can still see Sir Mathews in action. Thanks to You tube.

  • comooon the POTTERS!

  • Wonderful. A true legend. Was that a football pitch?

  • wish he was here now we're in the prem

  • Sir Stanley at his best!

  • not reall at his best to be fair to the man he was a better player in his prime as by the late 50's he lost his place in the england team.but a legend in his prime.

  • stoke city proud and ready to repeat class! the roots of football.

  • Saw Stan play a few times for England at Windsor Park and as usual was brilliant ,think it was 54,55 they beat N.I. 1-0 and Matthews scored the only goal.

  • This must have been the end of the season and yet the pitch is a disgrace, amazing that Mathews could play at his age in an era of agricultural tackling (and pitches). Good luck Stoke, see you at Spurs next year.

  • Sir Stan retired age 50

    Nakata retired age 29

  • RIP Stan, true legend. Jimmy McIlroy who supplied the pass was a great player in his own right.

  • A True Legend.

  • It's amazing how ageless he was when he picked up that through-ball like he was half his age (he was around 46 when he played that match, I think). What a great athlete.

  • What a beautiful moment. It brought tears to my eyes. If only football could return to its working class roots and be the peoples game again! Sir Stanley Matthews - Forever a Legend!

  • @bennyharrisuk But that era doesn't exist anymore, think of the poverty then as opposed to now,it's just a different world now and football reflects that.Wish they'd cut the prices nowadays mind.

  • I was in the Boothend End for that match. A fairy tale ending. Brilliant!!

  • my father took to me to cardiff city [schoolboy enclosure]to see the great Sir Stan.this is an era when fans could stand together, without any trouble.

  • thanks stan you are the best RIP

  • there will only ever be 1 stanley matthews,SIR stanley matthews.

  • sir stan our man.
