  • Its Joshua Hlomayi Dube. I have got the single that was released in the 70s, its written Thomas and Joshua. It was done during their days at Mhangura wheere they enternained Mine workers as the Halleluya Chicken Runn Band

  • I am a venda from south africa. Shona music does touch me a lot. i grew up listening to this type of music

  • This is not Jonah Sithole playing here..this was during Hallelujah Chicken Run Band days when Thomas Mapfumo was playing with Joshua Dube, Elijah Josam and others...most likely the lead guitar is Joshua Dube

  • @gatmanism2 There is another version of this that is definitely Joshua. Maybe on this one it's the both of them? I don't think Joshua was able to play mbira guitar like that, certainly not this early.

  • @AboubacarSiddikh Thats what I thought as well, this is a very polished performance.. but the credits on this Take One album from the early 70s make no mention of Jonah Sithole. Have you listened to some of the other tracks eg.

Gore Iro and other HCRB tracks that "israelmustrise" has posted here on Youtube? ..Joshua Dube was also around in the very early days doing mbira interpretations

  • @gatmanism2 Credits on cd's are often wrong. I believe the version with Joshua might even be the original. But there's only one that played like this, and he was the father of mbira guitar. Moreover, some close scrutiny of the backing vocals might even make one suspect Jonah lent his voice to this one, too. Then again, I wasn't there in the room when it was recorded so I'm not 100% sure. But to me, it feels like Jonah.

  • @gatmanism2

this is definitely Joshua. On that HCRB album not only is he credited, there is a 20 page booklet that outlines the entire history of the band, not to mention the last song, when the lead singers are discussing how they hooked up with Thomas Mapfumo and Joshua Dube. Read Thomas Turino's "Nationalists, Cosmopolitans & Popular Music In Zimbabwe" for a great account of how Thomas Mapfumo and Joshua Dube came to right the song (on the original 1972, they are both given writing credits
