I make mine with lots of leftover homemade pico de gallo, chicken broth, corn, and black beans and the same spices that you used. I also add in tortilla strips to soak in the broth that act like dumplings and a corn starch slurry to thicken it up so it's more stew-like
Been making this for quite awhile per your video and always stop back for a refresher course since I tend to make soups more in the fall/winter. Thanks for the tips.
The moment I finished watching this video, I actually ran into my kitchen and made this yummy yummy soup and I am in love with this. I have guests coming in this weekend and am sure they will love it too. Thanks Chef.
Made it today. Added a pasillo pepper with most seeds removed, used about 50% more vegetables and butter, cooked them longer to soften more, about 1/3 more spices (got more vegetables, but same amount of stock, so that's why).
My husband and I just made this soup tonight and this is by far the best tortilla soup I've ever had. To top it off it was so easy to make. I will definitely be making this again in the future and its being added to the favorties category in my recipe book. Thanks !!! :)
That's so delicious!! you should try the balack bean soup, which is super simple and cheap: Boil the beans until cook, then use only the liquid (caldo) fry strips of tortilla, dice finely some white onions, serrano chiles and some cilantro, then serve the torillas into the caldo and garnish with a spoon of sour cream and garnish with the serrano, cilantro and onion it taste SOOO GOOD!!
Thanks Chef for all the tips and the great smile!!
Tried this recipe this evening and it is delicious! Served it with the traditional table garnish of lime, whole oregano and chopped scallion. Might try it with shrimp next time.
I am Mexican and have been looking for a really good Tortilla Soup. This one is the best so far. I made it one time before and I am making it again today. Yummy... Do you think you can get the recipe for Sweet mole chicken enchiladas. I once had them at Olvera Street and have yet to taste any like them.
@ChefTips so i made this tonight for my family and what can i say but THANK YOU JASON!!!! this was so delicious and so easy to make with your step by step directions this was the fist time i have ever cooked for my family and everybody loved it!!!!!!
This ended up being the best tortilla soup I have ever tasted. And it was easy. I even got a praises from my girlfriend's grandma and that's saying a lot. I did make a few additions though.
I added about a 1/2 - 3/4 cup of half & half and added about 3/4 cup of Monterrey Jack and 3/4 cup of cheddar cheese. (Grandma did look at me funny when I added this though) lol. But when it was time to eat it was nothing but smiles.
wow, I have been looking for this recipe. Thank you, Jason. I love tortilla soup. By the way; do you have a remote idea how to make oatmeal raisin cookies like those from Macdonalds? Those are delicious, crunchy and sticky to the tongue.
McDonald's probably has a bakery make up their cookies. If they are baking them on site, they are probably using a frozen cookie dough product. My wife does have a good recipe that I will share in a video sometime.
Hi Jason, great vdeo , i am planning on making this tonight or tomorrow. I know this will sound like a stupid question but i am from the uk and our terms can vary here. I was wondering what the tomato sauce was. Is it like passata? or is just chopped tomatoes? or is it like a pre made pasta tomato sauce which has added flavours etc? Tomato sauce is often ketchup here. I would also like to that you for the tomato soup recipe you posted, i made it the other day and it went down a storm
Hi! The sauce is a basic tomato sauce used for pasta. I used the Contadina brand. It is a tomato puree made from tomato paste, water, sugar, garlic powder, onion powder and salt. Hope this helps!
it's too americanized! Lol, I'm mexican and we don't add all that for it. When you wan it simple, just shred the chicken add it to to the broth. Then, you just heat up the torillas (I cut them in triangles) and when the soup is hot, just add them in. They get a bit soggy, but I assure you, they taste good like that! Yum.
this guy just try to help others to cook. I know how the mexican food tastes; am latino too but enjoy this guy recipes. he is a great cook. Just appreciate how he helps others to cook nice.
@lupelicious: I don't think its americanized. He is just making it really complex, it looks similar to what I had at an mexican restaurant near Matamoros.
One again I impressed my family with an outstanding dish! After a failed attempt to fry the tortillas in a pan, I chose to toast them it in the oven instead. It worked out wonderful and it was less greasy. Great recipe chef! Thanks
It looks delicious, but here in Mexico we use this ingredients for a chicken soup, the tortilla soup is just the chicken broth with tomato, garlic and onion with the tortilla chips, mozarella, chihuahua, oaxaca or any white cheese, avocado, chipotle pepper and cream.
I'm going to try this one. Been disappointed with some tortilla soup recipes in the past, but this one looks like it's right on the money to me. I LOVE tortilla soup - can't wait to taste this. Thanks for posting Jason.
Hope you enjoy it! My wife is afraid of the fryer as well. Just keep a close watch on them. Having the homemade tortilla strips makes this soup extra good! Let me know how it turns out for you! Cheers, Jason
It's 7 am in the morning and new I wanted Tortilla soup for dinner. I'm gong to try this recipe tonight. I would love to see the actual recipe posted so I could print it out.

oo my god jason this recipe its awesome i did it for my wife and she said i should be cooking every night lol thanx 4 the recipe and by the way the mexican salsa its DELICIOSA MMMMMM THANX AGAIN
This makes a wonderful vegetarian dish as well when made with vegetable broth and vegetarian chicken-substitute (I recommend Quorn (tm) brand as it holds up well in soups and has a pleasant flavor). This from an avid meat eater who has to cook vegetarian alot to maintain domestic peace. The powerful seasoning in this soup makes it hard to distinguish from 'classic' and vegetarian style.
of course ur wife says it's the best.. shes your WIFE!!. LOL. jus givin ya a hard time. I'm gonna try this. thanks for this and all the other good vids. my compliments to the chef.

Thanks! Do you eat dairy and eggs? Let me know your limitations and we can come up with something!
Thanks!

Yes, I eat dairy and eggs, but I do not eat seafood of anytype or any meats, so basically I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian.
Thanks, April

Looks yummy. I had tortilla soup every day for lunch when I was in Mexico. I'll have to try making it myself some day...

Another excellent recipe.
Another wonderful video
