Did anyone else notice that the guy with long hair and tattoos on his arms that goes home in the Caveman ep. is also in the newest Curiosity about drug use? He is the cocaine user named "Rob". I found it strange because throughout the whole test he continually made it clear how "coked up" he was.
Not only that, but the woman who stood up to the fear test in the "Evil" Curiosity is an actress named Robin Greenspan.
The only thing making me "Curious" now is how much of this show is staged.
I noticed it and actually came here to reinforce my thoughts. I was just thinking that no wonder he couldnt survive out there, he's an addict. But now you're having me doubt the credibility of this show as a whole too..
I wanted to believe that their tests and studies were real, but I am just not sure.
It has got to be either a. entirely fabricated or b. re-enactments of actual studies that were conducted. However, that doesn't explain why his name is different in the caveman episode...
@kevishere no, in the show, they had already lived like that for at least 7 days. They couldn't find any real meat and were living off grass, frogs, snails, and mice.
I hope they have good advisors, their spear fishing technique is way off and without the cultural tools, awareness skills (bird language, tracking, wild edibles, etc,) they're going to have off results. Also, the statement that we are living longer is a misnomer, we are living longer compared to a post hunter gatherer time period and after the introduction of refined flour, and not by much. MORE of us are living longer would be a more accurate statement.
@primitiveskills I would hope so too, no 'real cavepeople' ever had to start from a zero knowledge base, and it's still going to be tough even if they are told how. Some of them clearly have some relevant skills and know-how. I don't quite get what you mean about relative life spans. Sure, our hunter-gatherer ancestors were healthier (and larger) than the farmers who followed, but surely for some time now 'we' have been out-living them by some margin.
The landscape & it's carrying capacity, including tribal infanticide, killed/kept in check a larger percentage of the population through starvation, territorial disputes for hunting rights, etc, but time & again, at least on this continent, Africa, and Australia, "Elders" of tribes remained active & healthy in to their late 70's to Early 90's. Our European (mine) & Greek/Roman counterparts were peaking at 35 and living until their 60's. Diet and health of the supporting bioregion. White Flour.
@primitiveskills OK, after some reading around the subject I would agree with you, there's plenty I still don't understand (always will be :)) and academics themselves will always argue, but it seems there is a concensus that people in HG societies could reach a "ripe old age", assuming they got over the "bumps" of early childhood and adulthood....
@raysteer Thanks for a fair analysis. It is too easy to be romanced by the idealistic or the oversimplified in these studies. We have a three part series on modern diets and paleo diets documenting some of the effects if you are interested. youtube (DOT) com/watch?v=vaBSK3fQ3Mc" Look up "Maine Environmental Educators Conference Pt.3 if the link doesn't show on this comment (primitveskills channel).
Interesting. I went through an experiment myself where the only income I used was from "being a bum." Lasted 20 days. Luxuries aside, I was able to earn enough recycling/scavenging to eat and even buy a Huawei m835, which provide internet and another significant income.
Reason for this self induced poverty; to see if adult children, the poor, etc. had any excuse to be in their positions. To see if there were ways for them to lift the burden of their existance and not be dependent of others.
go billy berger!
