You actually can convert step sequencer clips back to piano style MIDI clips if you right-click the step sequencer clip and choose "Bounce to Clip(s)"

You can actually convert a SS clip to a MIDI clip. Bring up the clip context menu in the track view and choose "Bounce to Clip". Voila, MIDI clip.
