I don't want any culture to die, they shouldn't - it will never happen as long as the young take the time to connect to their heritage - their cultural stories and learn from their elders. Once they are gone - they are gone. Listen and learn from them - culture survives for a very good reason - they are worth something - they are your family - take care of them. Peace & good luck.
I dont want my culture to die. My dad is a kusaq my mom isnt. I always tell her "mom, teach me yup'ik" and she says later. Im very disapointed that i have to learn from the internet! Before i moved to Arizona i was very blessed that my gramma was teaching me :-) i was very happy. And then i found out we had to move from Alaska to Arizona. I dont want to live in kusaq style where we dont do things ourselves i want to learn how my own culture lives. Hopefully my mom will understand soon!
I am white, went to school in Tununak and saw the oldways dying. My husband is yupik and I will make sure that when we have kids they know their history. If we want the yupik culture to stay alive then it will take everyone to do it. Don't just think the schools will keep the culture alive becouse they wont. Parents need to their children to, bring them egg hunting, moms/grandma teach your girls to saw kuspuks. It is you the parents that will decide if the yupik culture is saved or lost.
Like I told my dad, The Old Ways Are Dying. Nobody carves, it is for profit, no one sews , it is for profit. The Western Culture is slowly eating up our past. I am Yup'ik, and my culture is dying.
