grab an old router with USB storage then setup openwrt or another custom firmware, then strip out some functions make it into a FTP box. Never run an FTP server on your main PC, it is just not worth the security risk. Get a old router or something where if it does get compromised, the attacker will not be able to cause much damage.
@gundambob646 I use it for my web servers , So i can just drag and drop and continue working on another project . Command line i would have to know the name of the file etc too much work ;)

Don't even set up an FTP server. Set up an SSH server and SFTP runs over that, then you have a more secure system, and an easier way to share you SSH keys. So you can disable password authentication entirely on that ssh server, once you have generated private keys that you authenticate with the ssh server with. What happens if someone steals that private key? Well you can password protect that and have your OS remember the password, so easier authentication and more secure authentication!
Dropbox has a feature (in preview) that, for all intense and purposes, is an FTP :) So... I have up to 9 GB of FTPness after all my free extra storage!
If anyone bothered to read any more you would see that PuTTY is pronounced like it sounds, it says so on its official website under article A.10.4 in the FAQ.
I was going to start an FTP server, however I decided to just make it a local server with an old HP desktop PC with Pentium 4 (With HYPER-THREADING!) and 1GB of RAM over 4 256mb RAM modules! Woop! Works great. The PC itself cannot plat 720p video (or higher) but it can stream to multiple computers fine :D

Hi Brother,
You seem to be good at IT and I wonder if you could help me setup FTP Filezilla on my new PC with W7 OS.
Filezilla works fine with XPpro but the same setting in W7 doesn't. You are expert and my e-mail is rajinder.nijjhar@ntlworld.com.
I have over 2450 Youtube Videos on Christianity/Islam, etc. and you may love to watch some.

@lockergnome I use transmit and Cyberduck but mostly transmit.
GMELECTRONICS365 1 month ago
Is cyberduck, easier than Apache? Mind you I don't really want a computer running 24/7.
But, on the other hand I'm getting fed up with web-based hosting. Yes the official .COM type hosting, not some free hosting.

I guess, if there was a web-based version of Apache or something, hmm.

@GMELECTRONICS365 Why not just run command line?

It's actually "How to set up a FTP server". An is used only before vowels.
rizuhbull 1 month ago
@rizuhbull Yeah but the next letter is the first letter of the acronym, not the word itself. And it's acceptable this way.
If it was full it would have been ok : "How to set up a file transfer protocol server"
Chrisevil 1 month ago
@rizuhbull the word "ef" starts with an 'e'
swadlol 1 month ago
@rizuhbull whether to use "an" or "a" depends on whether the *sound* of the word start with a vowel not simply the spelling

Use a NAS for local network sharing and dropbox or similar for external sharing.

Something I found quite useful which is better than setting up an FTP server. You can use PogoPlug it's free and uses software to connect.
