i love the fact that someone actually uses the true purpose of a cadenza. to take a written one is ok, to come up with your own is amazing, nowadays..
why would someone mess with Beethoven's cadenza - Beethoven's cadenza is the best cadenza ever written for Mozart, and only rivalled by the one in his 3rd
regardless what people say about his mimicks, Klansky obviously shows the phrases in his facial expressions, just like Bernstein used to teach that music tells a story, and Klansky shows it, and he doesn't give a rip. So stop your stupid comments and listen to this Maestro, and if you don't like what you see, close your eyes and shut up.
the fact that there are opportunities for individual piano players to put their stamp on a mozart concerto is what makes them special for me, as was probably the case when he played them in his day. every audience got their own improvised mozart "solo" which i think is pretty awesome. i always look forward to the direction a pianist will take with each cadenza.
I agree, in a sense, that Mozart should write his own. Actually, I think he did. However, in opposition, cadenza's aren't meant to sound like the artists, or even compliment them, but express musical inspiration from the main piece. Through that inspiration, similar themes remain but still produce their own sound.
I've just watched and listened to the DVD of Klansky's performance. The DVD is from the public library, so I wanted to make sure this concerto is here. Mozart's PC No.20 has always been one of my favorites. I have many recordings of it. Up to date I thought the best cadenza ever was Daniel Barenboim's one. Klansky's cadenza is a MASTERPIECE. All the elements of the first movement are there. Wonderful, maestro Klansky!
PS All great artists are a bit "mad", otherwise they wouldn't be ARTISTS...
O my gosh. I loved his energy. It drew my attention that much more. Now i was expecting the usual Beethoven cadenza but he mastered this one. Who wrote this cadenza?
If Glenn Gould had ever played Mozart, this guy would have competition for weirdest play style for sure. BTW I hated this cadenza...it sounds like Liszt, not Mozart.
@ProfMaximo The pianist is doing a great work..at least that is what I can easily see..And curiosly I see him happy and smiling almost all the piece, when you say he looks mad, he is concentrating a little bit more maybe. If you play piano, sometime you may understand why pianists make sometimes some different faces and you will notice that if you are mad, you'll hardly make a good performance or even can play the piano that way...
WOW, his apparent bizarre behaviour is worse than Glenn Gould's. LOVE IT! Its so good to see people really feeling the music they are playing, best recording I've heard of this yet! and im obsessed with this piece!
Can someone explain me this cadenza-thing, please? Is it that the composer has left some space for the solist for free improvisation? If yes, how come some cadenzas are identical? For example, Gulda and Argerich play the same cadenza.
The composer may write out the cadenza. Sometimes it is left to the performer. Sometimes other composers may write one which is so good it effectively becomes part of the concerto, so you may hear the same cadenza in different performances (e.g. Beethoven's cadenza in this concerto)
Klansky wrote this cadenza. What an amazingly expressive pianist. He makes you me laugh while at the same time appreciating the depth and perfection of his playing. He is a unique pianist.
In this concerto, you owe it to yourselves to seek out Sviatoslav Richter's recording. This one has the charm and the drama in the orchestral playing and I like pianist's overall interpretation but a trifle of drama would have made it even better; after all this is in D minor and Mozart wrote only two in the minor keys this, and, the C minor (No.24).
This is perhaps the most brilliant cadenza I've heard for K.466!! I like his style! This concerto was balanced, not too aggressive, but not lacking emotion or power. I would love to see what Klánský would do with 451, 482, 488, 492 & 503.

Such a beautiful cadenza! Amazing!
I love this performance and think that the famous "mimcks" just add to the overall performance.
You can see how he truly "feels" the music.

which cadenza is this?

Bravo. Mais dommage que les cadences ne soient pas celles de Beethoven. Les cadences jouées ne sonnent pas Mozart.
Merci quand même.

Ugh! why didn't Mozart just write his cadenza down. None of them sound remotely ‘Mozartean".

A very exciting performance!
cellestialX 1 year ago
his mannerisms are annoying ... they take away from the sound...
Mozart is not completely metronomic and also the cadenza is not as good as Beethovens... the cadenza incorporates the themes too flamboyantly...
nnp2051 1 year ago
@nnp2051 I agree - he has made a gene kelly movie out of this

This pianist has the most bizarre facial expressions of anyone, second only to Lang Lang. At least his playing is good.

Clearly the best live performance of this work; brilliant and "in style" cadenza too.

I agree the Cadenza here is 'bloody', but not 'fantastic'.
StephenChin1 2 years ago
this is not the cadenza I'm use to.
It's not as effective as the other one - sounds too much like a different piece and composer (which i know it is but it's not meant to)
