Among other things, the main difference between Light and Lelouch is that while Light soon becomes a complete physcopath willing to sacrifice his own family to further his goals, try as he might Lelouch never manages to fully seperate himself from his emotions. He comes close severaly times, but never manages to fully ditch his conscious. I'm not gona spoil it but his reaction to a certain death halfway through R2 totaly seperates his character from Lights who would never react that emotionaly

@mundo646 but Lelouch is feuding w/ family the entire time...isn't that a bit on the level of Light? I'd say towards the end Light completely lost his mind, while Lelouch had a sense of responsibility for his own actions. But Light's kills were never close to home til halfway into death note (which I think cause him to go crazy). Lelouch begins the anime by killing his brother Clovis, which I think he took in all too easily.

And the family situation is different. Light's family love him and are the closest thing to pure good in the entire series, whereas half of Leoluch's are either insane or trying to kill him. His true friends and close family he never really ends up (intentionally at least) harming.

@shisumi1 If you've watched the whole series you would know that is not remotely true. Light, unlike Lelouche, is a complete monster. And while Lelouche will end up doing terrible things, ultimately he is still a good person, Light is not. Light is a vane, self centered egoist who only cares for justice when it benefits his vision of the world, and more importantly he's willing to kill anyone who gets in his way.

@xhoyl It's not quite that black and white, Light is at least somewhat sympathetic as far as villains go, but Lelouch is just "good' enough to reach anti-hero status. Of course, Light and Lelouch are practically opposites in various subtle ways; Light is an idealist who'd be helped by a bit of cynicism, Lelouch is a cynic who could use a bit of idealism. Light cared only for himself, Lelouch had a number of friends, family, and love interests he cared for.

He'd basically sold his soul for his vision of a "perfect" world, while throughout all of Code Geass, Lelouche somehow manages to hold onto his humanity despite his many mistakes, some of them quite horrible, and in the end even redeems himself for them. Light does no such thing.

And if you notice way into both anime's, both Lelouch and LIght start to lose their heart and act like normal people. Plus, Kira wanted to change the world, while Lelouch wanted to destroy Brittania (2/3 of the world)
