i really hate to say this, but.. I always hated when comedy shows had these random serious episodes. I know it shows the actor's range, but it used to infuriate me and I had to change the channel. I'm not sure that I would even consider Family Ties a comedy, though. It was right up there with one of the shows I really never liked, like Growing Pains , Silver Spoons and Who's The Boss.

@getoutofmyway01 certain episodes like that could be a bit irksome....but I love this show. can't help it
