In the Bible, it's always only been ambiguous "fruit.," but various sources suggest it was anything from grapes to figs to pomegranates to wheat (of all things!).
The image of the apple as the fruit of the Tree is based on a Latin pun: "eating the apple (malus), Eve learned evil (malum)."
That tree always annoyed me because there was nothing to do in there except stare at it. This part of the level always felt so unfinished. I was kind of hoping for something more futuristic.

Originally it was meant to be a fig tree. But in medival times the symbol was changed into an apple tree.
