  • Congratulations for your instrumentation, for the mellotron replica and of course for your talent ;)

  • I LOVE that sound on South Side of the Sky. I was wondering what you might recommend for a guitarist going back to keyboards after 20 years. Would love to find something of a Emerson/Wakeman sound, maybe like a Hammond/Moog sound for not too much money.. Maybe a good emulator out there?

  • @rsvp9146 i'd recomend the vintage keys module or thye vk6 keyboard for all the classic tones in one unit.

  • Did I got it right ? You took 1948 Hammond and customised it ? Uhm...

  • @konked yes!

  • @wilecuyote Whoa, I mean isn't - or wasn't - that rather valued instrument ? I am aware how musicians are after original sound but there are Hammond soundalike keyboards available which would do in live performance considerng the acoustic circumstances on live gigs.

  • @konked i'm not sure i understand you correctly. there are many Hammond clones out there that sound pretty decent but none of them sound exactly like the real thing. you can always hear the difference, particularly in the upper octave. compare any live YES recording since 1980 with YESSONGS and hear the difference.

  • @wilecuyote That's what I meant :) But I wouldn't have an original Hammond customised but preserve it original condition. I know they did rebuild them in 70's to make them more movable. But I get your point digging up the original keyboard sound of Yes.

  • @konked i agree with you. i would never chop a hammond in good shape. i wish i had taken a picture of mine before i chopped it though, it was in really terrible condition and chopping it was really the only to make it survive. see my Tarkus video of my other Hammond in mint condition.

  • @wilecuyote Thank you for your patience ! Have you other things of say Wakeman gear such as RMI and Polymoog or string machines ?

  • @konked see my Long Distance Runaround video to get a good look at a real RMI (the same as Rick used). alas, i don't have my Polymoog anymore.

  • Are you using the Mellotron as a midi controller through your Vintage Keys module? If not, which module is producing the actual Mellotron sounds?

  • @akyeager YES, that is the VK mellotron in the clip. I also have the Mike Pinder samples in my sampler (which I should've also demo'd).

  • Who made that m400 replica?

  • @TheCompanyRules a friend helped me with it. it's an exact replecation in every detail except that it's 2" bigger (not enough to tell by looking but easier to play standing up). i also put it on "skates" which adds another 3" to the heigth.

  • which is the keyboard that is up on the hammond organ?

  • @martinwilde97 that's the Fatar soft key controller. i have it midi'd to the SE1 in my rack.

  • @wilecuyote Thanks , what model?

  • @martinwilde97 Studio 610. small, lightweight, just the features i need and no more. i love it!

  • What Yes song is the moog/mellotron melody from at 5:30?

  • @65CA And You And I from the YES album Close To The Edge.

  • chuck noris ;) hahahah

  • hey Matt! this is very cool stuff.... I personally love the sound of the Mellotron / Mini Moog combination at the end...congratulations and keep the great sounds

  • @rigovalenz thanks!

  • You guys are awesome saw you the last 2 classic fests at Nelson's Ledges hope you're playing this years again!

  • @EricDB007 i hope so too. love that weekend!

  • To crazyninja8730, there is a book out by Alfred Publishing that does have all the Wakeman keyboards transcribed for the whole Fragile album. You might want to try alfred.com and find it there. They have 2 versions of the book: one for guitar tab and one for keyboards and vocals. The Roundabout solo is in there in its entirety.

  • @Relayerman thanks for the info, i didn't know about this. i just ordered it and i'm interested to see how accurate it is. i'll get back to you on this!

  • @Relayerman finally got the book in the mail. as for the Roundabout solo, it's a bit disappointing. the broad outline insn't too bad but the details are wrong. if you tried to play it that way it would sound ok but not really correct. im glad i figured it out on my own. same for the South Side. many parts are just wrong.

  • Do you guys ever tour philly? If you do try the tower theater.

  • @godbluffvdgg what size is the venue? what kind of turnout do you think there would be for a YES cover band there?

  • @wilecuyote Capacity 3,119... The cover group the Musical Box, sells out on the Lamb tour. ( tickets were sold up to 150.00). I went to their Foxtrot tour and it wasn't as well received. Perhaps a Yes songs or shows tour would spur the Yes heads on. With the right marketing You could sell out three nights. I suggest coordinating through WMGK or WMMR. Hope to see you> We phillyians are nostalgic driven... A show in the round or the 1976 JFK YES tour would do well.

  • @godbluffvdgg thanks. i'll check it out but i don't know if we could sell that many tickets even in Philly.

  • Very cool. It was neat to see the complete separation of right hand and left in "And You and I."

  • @cattnipp the parts can be played with either hand. i've tried it both ways but i like this way best.

  • You've deminstrated excellent playing.

And you had me dreaming of your '48 Hammond sound at night

  • @mamushkin thanks, i dream about it too!

  • Wow! Your rig is great! I'm a big YES fan, and an avid prog keyboarder. Where do you get the music for all of your YES? I've tried to find the roundabout organ solo to no avail.

  • @crazyninja8730 thank you! you won't find the Roundabout solo anywhere. to my knowledge it has never been transcribed. i figured it out by ear along with everything else.

  • @crazyninja8730 if it helps i've got a guitar pro file of roundabout, well most song off of fragile actually and everything seems pretty darn close including Hammond solo. pm me your email if you want them, cheers Matt N AUS

  • @IMaiden89 i'd like to see that myself. i'm curious about how accurate it really is.

  • @wilecuyote i'll send you roundabout just pm me your email sorry for the late reply

  • thanks for showing us this! very cool, and a good tutorial, too! i have the mellotron and moog set-up only. cheers.

  • Nice tour of your cool rig! Is your band based in the Seattle WA area? I heard there was one around here but have never seen them.

  • @JohnLRice thanks! GFTO is in Rochester, New York.

  • Congratulations!!! Nice Keyboards!!!!!!

  • Great gear Matt! Congratulation. Hugs from Brazil!

  • You're much more talented than yes could have hoped to be. Godspeed, you crazy diamond.

  • Im thinking of having someone build a Mellotron replica. Who did yours and how much did it cost?

  • Whoa! A midi controller that looks just like a 'tron? Where did you find it? Also, do you use Vintage Keys for the 'tron sounds? Checked out the new digital Mellotron?

  • @gareebee i commishioned it. i use the VK module in the rack and also yhe Mike Pinder samples.

i've only seen the digital tron on youtube.

  • Well deserved praise here for Matt, great guy and great musician. Felt the need to share this video on my "A Year of YouTube" series on Examiner.com

  • Come to Atlanta Please! We'll take you out for sweet tea and biscuits!

  • @nedmarc sounds awesome!

  • Wow. Great player! You should start a King Crimson cover band on the side! Cover everything from 1969 - 1975. :) I'll fly over and check it out for sure! :) Or I could pop in on bass if you'd like. Rock on.

  • excellent ! gear, sounds, skills, you are amazing

  • thank you everyone. check out Going For The One, we're presenting Yessongs this year : )

  • Very cool, Matt! I was catching up on my email from the Southside Yahoo group, and saw this from a couple of months ago!

  • Excellent setup. I love Yes songs and enjoyed watching your video. Thanks.

  • Cool stuff you got there :)

  • That is an awesome rig! And youre a great player! cool stuff. It would deffinatly be great if you did a tutorial on "And You and I" and also that organ solo from roundabout, both of which were AMAZING!! If you cant do a tutorial, maybe at least you could send me the notes/ chord sequences?

  • @afoordm i'm going to do a series of YES tutorials as i have time, so stay tuned : )

  • Nice vid Matt! Is that a Memotron?

I regret the day I sold my mint Mini Moog back in the 80's!

    YES rules

    Del

  • @Delboywww no, it's 1 of a kind. built to exact mellotron specs. every detail is perfect! i love playing it like it's the real thing because it really seems real. (really!)

I bet the guy i bought my moog from in 1980 regrets it too! paid $700 for it then, which was the going rate. i refinished mine (even though it didn't need it) and i love the way it looks now. i admit i'm already eyeing the new voyager...

  • @wilecuyote

Well it certainly looks and sounds the part Matt. I wonder whether the Voyager will reproduce the same sounds as the Model D. I must admit I am tempted with the "Old School" version. Being a Wakeman fan I had to have that "Catherine of Aragon" sound so that was the reason for buying the Mini Moog back then!

Great playing by the way Matt, very impressive.

  • can you please make tutorial of how to play And You And I???

  • @razorblade393 maybe i will! i'm going to do one on Long Distance Runaround so look for that soon.

  • Hey, Matt, I'm the keyboardist for a Progressive Djent band, and I'm really looking for a nice and easy way to get that mellotron sound. What are you using as the mellotron emulator?

  • @richardhigonsby what you're hearing is a vintage keys rack unit. sounds great and very convenient. i also use the mike pinder samples.

  • @wilecuyote

Yeah, just this weekend I got the Roland M-vs1 rack unit, and I love it.

  • Awesome!

    Really enjoyed the tour!

Loved the Moog & Mellotron of "And you & I" soooooo pretty!!!!

Looking forward to future YES videos & studio hardware updates / keyboards!!

  • Nice work

  • Wow - hammond sounds great love it!

  • Cool Matt! Thanks for sharing.

  • GREAT demo, thanks Matt.

  • Well done.

  • Excellent video, Matt.

  • @Yesrocks thanks! i resisted the urge to drone on...

  • Great job. Thanks for sharing!! JV-80 - 61-keys, not 60...but who's counting ;)

  • @prosoloist ooops. i knew that!

  • Really love the mellotron midi controller--Genius!

How do you haul all that gear to shows?

  • @midiman thanks, it's the "perfect mellotron" never malfunctions! believe it or not, everything but the tron will fit in my minivan. i've recently added a trailer to accomodate gear.

  • Very nice sound on that Hammond!

The Mellotron doesn't clunk though! You oughta have scorch marks on it, or at least paint flames on it, since Rick burned his.

Thanks for giving the tour Matt!

  • @Jubal24 thanks, i'm very pleased with the organ tone. i didn't mention in the video that i built the lesie from model 900 parts. since it's in such a small plywood box, i replaced the 15" speaker with a 10" guitar speaker. works great for rock tone!

as for the tron, i guess i could kick it once in a while to add to the authenticness (?) of playing one, but it always works correctly! it figures rick would burn his, he had to one up tony who merely pushed his off the stage.

  • Nicely done Matt!

  • @starkl9 thanks tim!
