Hey, First off you are an excellent smith, secondly I just started trying out my own chain Damascus, I noticed a large amount of black "substance" showing up on the metal, is this usual for a weld, or am I burning the metal?
@phoenixforger I'm having the same issue, I think it's iron oxide due to not enough borax flux and not cleaning it enough between each forging operation. Problem I'm having now is that it's become included in the billet and I can't get it out without hammering it really, really thin, and then brutally wire-brushing it, slathering it in flux and folding it and layering it back up, but that's obviously gonna ruin my pretty patterns.
@toadabc you have an appreciation for the power tools afterwards. I made a bowie with out much use of a powertool. but i did use the angle grinder to start the teeth on the spine, shape the gaurd, and round off the edges of the handle. everything else was done with hammer, file, and stone. once i get some good equipment, ill have that appreciation and not take things for granted.
does the folding method make it harder or sharper by making it like thighter? i mean does a iron plate folded stop a bullet better then iron just forged or is it just good for knives / swords?
Sweet iii woulld never think of using a chainsaw chain for raw materials i wonder if bike chain are high carbon steel too they got to have some strenge to them i dont think mild steel would work on a bike but anyways the chainsaw definately has more carbon.
Wouldn't it be a good idea to have the inserted steel the same width as the welded chain? Perhaps forge the chainsaw-bar into one bar with even edges before inserting the edge? It will take allot of grinding to expose the edge of the 01 tool steel if its buried inside the chainsaw-steel like that. Right?
wheres part 2?! haha. great video!

What is the advantage of starting with hand welding, rather than going straight to power hammer?

@toadabc I was wondering that myself. I don't have a power hammer, is it possible to do without power tools?

It has nothing to do with holding bullets, it´s a historical forging method mainly for producing swords of high quality.
