You don't think that Shirley and Kallen had a legitimate (at that point) reason to off him? And C.C. was using him for her own good in the beginning as well. The point is, not who he "should" end up with, but rather what the creators wanted to show.

And if you've done your research you would know that originally, both towards the end of Season 1 and during the middle of R2, there were gonna be more K/L scenes but in the end the certain romantic subplot idea was discarded.
