PAST(?) civilizations farmed the landscape of Mars.

Maybe 17ooo years ago not all the people left Mars due to the catastrophic climate changes. Those who stayed managed to adapt  to the new circumstances and developped a unique society up there that grew and prospered - and never forgot about it's interplanetary (interstellar?) travelling skills. Maybe they walk among us when on a holiday. This has absolutely nothing to do with Alternative 3 though.
