I'm not an audiophile but I think there was something about the mixing technology of the day that gives this much more depth and richness of production when listened to on vinyl rather than CD/internet download. Same is true of Todd Rungren and Frank Zappa......and all the dub reggae from the same period. JMHO.
This, in my giant, swelling opinion, is the only album, ( that's what we used to call them, younger folk) where Eno reached a good point marrying inovative music and some sort of humanity. This was probably by chance, as he tends to go on about.
He spawned much nonsense, and I have doubts about his overall influence. But this stuff cooks and has feel, which 95% of his output does not. But now he is to be a videopainter, a spokesman,....no, sorry, you are become a silly person. A Stephen Fry 2.
really, did biggie sample this? that's actually pretty cool i'm old school- only know the original. one of the best fuckkin guitar solos ever, outside of fripp's on 'baby's on fire'
by the way, this is VERY close to the sample used for hypnotize, but that's actually a herb albert song called "rise" and not this track. check it out and you'll see, especially around the guitar solo parts. BOOOOOYYYYYAAAAHAHAHHAAHAHAHA!
Pray thee, engage my argument. The spliced in (literally, in that low-tech era) wailings of Dunya Yasin--"Lebanese Mountain Singer"--well convey thy country's doleful history. I recall, as a teenager, the song coming back to me as I was watching the 82' 1st Lebanon War unfold on TV.
Obviously, I don't know the words, but the song's powerful atmosphere of brooding apprehension and weary grief is well amplified by Brian & David's synths.
heyhey, you know the song "what is soul" from the "stereo mc's" too?that was fun, hearing how they used "the regiment" in that.can i find "what is soul" on youtube?i have it on tape! sjaloom, "deman" from leuven/belgium
Yeah, I loved that track. I remember I recorded it off the radio when I was like 16. If you like old UK hip hop, you should check out Silvamousetv's channel. He's got lots of old stuff by Derek B., Kamanchi Sly, MC Goldtop and others.
to jlipicki: That's because the sound is compressed when transferred to digital.

@missmargyify BIG was still in grade school when Byrne/Eno created this tune and album. They were and still are way out front.

I like the way they mixed the traditional, moody, rythmic Arabic instruments with that cool western house percussion beat.
Extremely revolutionary sounds. Very prophetic. But i also think Brian Eno's influence with Roxy Music was pivitol too.

As far as I'm concerned THIS is should be the unofficial national anthem of long-suffering Lebanon.

Great song in a great album.
They were really in advance, pioneers of the samples. They recorded voices from the radio or from the churchs.
I remember when I make my friend listen these songs how they laugh,,,
