He did not sign the contract because the contract says he cannot compete any similar eating contest if he wins Nathans. It says he needs Nathan's permission to appear in TV or any other events for one year after the Nathans. Thus Kobayashi becomes a slave of Nathans, he will be not independent individual any more. He refused to sign it.

Contract from Nathan's to Kobayashi was so unfair. contract was saying he can't eat hot dog any TV show or competition, he can't do any kind of business using his special eating ability ...basically contract says Kobayashi can't do any type of activity about showing his eating ability in US. that why he didn't sign contract this year and he couldn't entry for the conpetition. This is racial discrimination. Kobayashi should have freedom to entry this competition. Nathan's is hypocrite

This is quite a bizarre happening which could only happen in USA. A Japanese guy is the champion of eating an iconic American dish but crashes the championship sanctioned by Major League Eating (who would not have an Ethiopian chapter).

The NYPD gets involved and it becomes a circus. Couldn't have thought of this hilarious scene even if I was a comedy writer.
