I have one of these as well. Best I can do is 5 scale lionel 18 inch passenger cars at a reasonable speed, with 6 it crawls. The cars draw a lot of current from the bulbs... I think 4 bulbs per car. I also can not get more that about 16V to the track. It run better will the Kline 15 inch aluminum cars and stream lighting...
Maybe your motor needs to be cleaned and have new motor brushes and brush springs installed. Its very easy to do. It probably would help if it needs it.
I hope this is a rare issue. I've been using my 18045 with scale freight while I saved up for the passenger cars. I now have all 10 available passenger cars, plus the matching R50B Express Mail car. I haven't had an opportunity to get them all on a track, though. I have to run these big suckers on the club layout. I would be greatly disappointed if they didn't. My 18056 Hudson pulls about 30 scale freight, and it's essentially the same engine. Did it not have enough power, or was it slipping?
I got it to pull a bit more. I think the cars & tender needed some oil. The tender is incredibly heavy too. I'm not sure why it can't pull all 8 I tested it with the 8 cars and it seemed like it had the power but it just crawled.
i was glad it could make it up the hill with the 5 cars. I have a dreyfus from K-line and it can pull the 8 cars we have. But she has a beautiful whistle. Your Hiawatha was that the one offered in 2005 (i think that or 2006)?

I'm surprised it only pulls six cars. It is a powerful locomotive. I have one too and it pulls great. My new Hiawatha can pull more than six cars.
