Can anyone tell me the cronological order to watch GitS? i'm completely lost, there's Ghots in the Shell, Ghost in the Shell SAC, and then there's another movie x.x, I'm completely lost.
@rodrigocapitelli The show is independent from the Mamoru Oshii's films. You have the show "stande alone complex" of 52 episodes and a movie "solid state society" that conclude the show.
@MsPowerCheese On the contrary, I would argue that the nudity in Ghost in the Shell is less gratuitous and more artful than the norm in Japanese animation. It goes more for realism than eroticism.
If you've seen the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex TV series, I'd say that the human body is used much more gratuitously there. The thing about the nudity in the movie is that it's supposed to be cold and inhuman rather than sexualized.
All I can say is WEIRD, and those fingers, that each split and become 3 smaller fingers to type way faster, STRANGE, Cool Helicopters though. Is there an English version?
To be honest the English dub wasn't bad if you compare it to other anime dubs at the time they really sucked compared to GITS so I was satisfied but I still love Atsuko Tanaka and the Japanese cast
I'm new to ghost in the shell and I have a question what is happening in the first 4 minuits of the film because I have no idea what these people are talking about. If someone could answer me with as much detail as possible that would be great
From what I remember they had a case of a programmer with classified information defecting from Japan.
A SWAT team was sent to recover him, but ran into "political problems" with the foreign diplomat claiming diplomatic immunity and that the programmer has asked for political amnesty so they had no right to arrest any of them.
Section 9's job was effectively a false flag operation, their job was to "take out" the diplomat while the foreign affairs ministry blame it on terrorism.
the trailer really sucked compared to the actual movie, first and second were just flat out,,,,,,Intense.....ghost in the shell and Akira are just awesome. Sometimes GITS reminds me of blade runner
i know im going to get a bunch of shit for this but, i usually perfer the english dubb if there is a good voice actor behind it. there are some cases like grave of the fireflys where i perfer the asian actors
This is one of the best movies ever. I heard about Hollywood remake. They must be joking. Even if they spend 300 million dollars on it, it won’t be as good as this one.
@Johnlindsey289 Matrix had very little in common with GITS, in Matrix, humans lived in a computer simulation and were unaware of it. In GITS, humans were all connected via a network that they were all aware of. In Matrix, the objective was to free the humans from the computer world, in GITS the story was centered around solving a network of crimes involving ghost-jackers and a cop searching for his partner's conscience lost in the net. Very different movies with a possibly similar visual style.
There are other similar moives to Ghost in The Shell such as The Island (2005) since Bay is a fan of GITS and anime, i bet he had GITS as an influence with references such as the cloning sequence a reference to the opening, futuristic idea of what it is being human and true identity. There's also Minority Report, bits of Avatar (Jake Sully having an ID crisis including the same cyberbody switcing technology since Cameron is a anime fan) and more.
Akira (GITS is from the producers), Vexville, Armitage III, Ninja Scroll, Golgo 13 The Professional, Wicked City, Animatrix, Appleseed 1 & 2, Metroplis (2001), Spriggan, Project A-Ko and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
This is the movie that shotgunned my brain all over the wall when I saw it in junior high. An absolute classic, that dosen't get the credit it deserves.
Me too, do you think it's as good as Akira? how old were you when you saw this? i was 15 back in 96 after being impressed by Akira, i knew i had to buy this movie for my 15th birthday after seeing ads for the movie including reviews on how it did in theaters and in magazines, i bought it with Akira and it left an impression on me. Do you think Felina Feral on Swat Kats looks like an anthro version of Kusanagi?
@Johnlindsey289 I first saw Ghost in the Shell when I was 17 back in the year 2000. And back then, this movie was only 5 years old. Absolutely, this movie is among the ranks of Akira as one of the most influential Japanese anime films ever directed and produced. I saw Akira for the first time back in 1996 when I was 13, and it blew me away. You know, come to think of it, I think Felina Feral does have some resemblence to Kusanagi.
Just imagine if Kusanagi touched that Ninja Turtles mutant goo formula that turns people into animals or if Dr. Emil Dorain and Professor Milo from Batman TAS together injected her with a feline formula yet Kusanagi still retains her hair, you get Felina Feral. Only sad thing is that Felina doesn't strip to wear thermotic disguising like Kusanagi does. Kusanagi is a cutie in the manga/TV show while Kusanagi is ugly in the movie
Stand Alone Complex or even Innocence with it's US $20 million budget could never improved on Oshii's original Ghost In the Shell. The animation is something very unique, hand-crafted noir, creating characters of it's own, apart from the series, sequel or manga (which the film does not exactly follow). In the comic, the major is a gay libertine, the chief is a monkey, Batou, well Batou is Batou, but there are a lot of cute little things Shirow created that did not surface until SAC...
@CaptainTripppz The cutest things in the GITS are Tachikomas. I always watch the japanese Anime in Japanese with subtitles. Allows me to understand the convos without the lame English translation
@Spetsnazovets yeah, Tachikomas are the main thing I had in mind when I wrote that. They just don't fit into the atmosphere of the 1995 GITS anime. Personally the CG animation in SAC is kind of annoying, it looks a little cheap/rushed at times... but I'm an oldfag who was introduced to anime by hand-drawn titles like Transformers, Robotech, Fist of the North Star, Venus Wars, etc... and the world has since moved on...
@CaptainTripppz lol bro I grew up on transformers, both jap and US, I watched Robotech, Macross, New Fist Of North Star, Voltron. I dont mind either to be honest.
I've recently purchased the Stand Alone Complete 1st Gig DVD Boxset and after watching a few episodes I can really see how much the animation has improved since the first movie.
Not saying it's bad, it looks great, of course better for the time it was made in but still, a godess among the anime's none the less!
I don't understand japanese so can't really judge how good it is, but english voice acting in anime generally sucks ass. GITS is decent, but most are crap.
One of the best cyberpunk anime movies from the 90s, easily. Animation is still top notch even for this time, given they did not use extensive CGI as they do today for one, but everything was more or less hand-drawn, and the story is compelling ofr those who like that with the more philosophical spin.
@ztrapwn Ghost in the shell's dub was good compared to others, but it sill wasn't the greatest. I thought that Kusanagi's voice was too mechanical in the english dub; there was no life to it.
@ztrapwn they don't take dubbing seriously and think cartoons are cartoons. But if they have the budget and hire actual actors for voice acting, the result is often really good. Examples are all the big time pixar or disney movies.
@ztrapwn just do what i did, download ghost in the shell with original voices and hardcoded english subs. thats what i did, it was awesome. and yea, most english voices in animes such ass, but GTS had it pretty decent imo

TV series are more simplified and less animated that cause by low budget and short time period, and the TV series sometimes look crap.
On the other hand this one is far better animated but the plot that sometimes seems hard to understand may bother you.
