How useful! Every summer we get a fly infestation in the basement for some reason which leads me to having to clean the whole darn thing from top to bottom. (We're talking nooks and crevices.) As much as I love to clean and enjoy the finished product, it's a daunting amount of work and sucks up a good week of my summer break. If we get an infestation again, I will indeed try this out. (As long as I find a way to keep the cats out of the booby trap.lol boobs)

Apple cider vinegar works just as well as pieces of fruit, with the added benefit of you not having to clean the bowl as often. Them fruitflies just looove the scent of fermented fruit!

Good advice. My wife an I had fruitflies a few months ago. Could've used this tactic. Did you, by chance, get that red bowl at JCP in a set of a big square plate, small square plate, and a mug? :P

When their were fruit flies at my house, we put some vinegar in a cup and placed a funnel made out of paper over it, making sure to seal the edge where the cup met the funnel. The flies would then fly into the funnel due to the smell of the vinegar, and were to stupid to escape through the same hole through which they entered and they died. Same principle as you demonstrated Dan, but I found my way to be more fun since you got to see the flies suffer. =]

I use a wine bottle. Leave about an inch of wine in the bottle and cover the top with plastic wrap. Take a tooth pick and poke a small hole in the top. The flies can not escape and end up drowning in the wine.

Once my roommate and I had a huge swarm of fruit flies in our apartment. It was Halloween weekend and we both carved pumpkins, she left hers open and we left for the weekend to stay with friends in another college. When we came back they had all congregated to the inside of her pumpkin, so we put the lid on and through it out. That greatly helped the problem. Also we got really good at kung fu ninja fruit fly slapping.
