I think that happens too often all around the world. I live in Portugal (and wishing to live in Seattle) and here's a blind woman in the subways of Lisbon that begs for money. I look at her and she's like... well painted nails, great coloured hair, good clothes, Adidas backpack... And then I see people giving her money. I stay like "who's the blind one, anyway?" That freaks me out.
I think those beggers are pretty well off, even if they don't actually have homes. I mean, a Starbucks coffee and an iphone? And if very few of them looked hungry or dirty then who would really feel sorry for them? lol Rich hobos. :P I would only help someone that actually needed help.
you are really stupid to be shocked that beggars little more than scam artists. seattle is not for greasers. if you live in seattle more than 2 years you would hate it and might get rolled on the street.
I'm thinking about moving to Seattle and it's nice to hear good feedback from outside party...especially about the people there being nice. I totally agree on the beggars though. I'm not gonna mince words. Those people are just Lazy.
if your uptight and have no sense of humor seattle is no place to be. think outside of the box and please keep it safe for all the homeless youth beggers
Seattke is a great place to live, don't ever get caught breaking the smallest law or you will go to jail, get put on probation and never get off nad then go to prison for them finding a way to violate you on probation, really the first friends you will make in seattle are people from poverty and the best friends you will have are they and the churches are wonderful.
Think of what you would do if you were in the same position...you would have to beg...some of them might look normal but...you gotta think of other things like criminal records and not having a address to have a job...ive got felonies and a place to stay and it took me 9 months to find a job...so if your on the streets you are screwed,,so give a little next time...its good karma
You know why the homeless in Seattle look so good...its because they have the better programs for the homeless...and yes the ones that look "homeless" in raggy clothes they do have mental problems and probably sleep on the street corner..

You guys should also understand that Eddy Bauer and a few other designers donate clothes to the homeless especially durring winter. Don't forget that without a home you can't always shower, you have no address...if you DO get a job ,how will you eat when your time is taken up for the first two weeks before payday ...who would hire them ? like anyone can just GET a job...You can't be so a-matter-of-fact and arrogantly ignorant..It's super hard for them to even get an I.D. card...Think man!!!
i was homeless in Seattle for about 12 yrs...i grew up running away from foster homes (mostly homeless as a child). Never had a mom or dad to guide me or teach me. It has taken me over 7 years to get over some serious pain and crippling loneliness just to be able to get off the streets and secure a career. This guy is so ignorant about REAL human issues, he has lived such a sheltered life that arrogance comes naturally to him. I am a welder now ...but I love the homeless and am no better.
I can hardly believe you're talking about Seattle, WA. I've never been in a worse city in my life. The people there are so judgmental. Perhaps that was the appeal for you - judging the homeless and all...But personally I can't stand it. When they find out I'm from Portland, they judge me and treat me as though I've never even sat in a chair before; then they make me go outside so they can tell me how tall some building is - like I've never even seen a building. Good place for misjudging.
I'm very outgoing and goofy. I'm from GA (where everyone is extremely friendly). However, I may be moving to Seattle mid-October. How would you describe the people? I heard it was hard to make friends because they're all so stuck-up.. Do you believe that even for an outgoing and fun person like it'd still be difficult? Do people in Seattle not like my type of personality?
My friend was talking to me about how he would condone medical research on the severely mentally ill, those on life support and basically anyone unable to give consent to it. I have no idea how I feel about that, yet I have no problem with animal research. Does this make me a hypocrite?
We have a lot of this in the Boston area. The thing is, most of those people you describe are not really homeless. They're staying with friends, or they're collecting SSI and they have a place to live.
Summertime in Harvard Square is a trendy place to be homeless, and many 15 to 25 year olds just do it for fun, and then go back to the burbs when winter comes.
The actually homeless ones - the one's your expect to see (smelly, worn out clothing) are usually mentally ill, and it's usually obvious why they don't have jobs.
I don't even think too many people end up on the streets because of alcohol or drugs. It's usually more a case of their mental illness, and the substances are a reaction of that.
I would only tip street musicians but not outright beggers. This is a problem I'm seeing more of in America, everyone is begging for more money they don't earn.
Of course, a lot have recently got evicted from their homes and have not had time to get their clothes worn and dirty yet. They still have the last of their carton of smokes left. They don't know how to beg because no one has done it here for so long.
As a matter of policy, I never give money to beggars. I would by them a sandwich, but they never take up the offer. I haven't seen a beggar yet that hasn't reeked of booze.
Try living and working here man. I'm sure your opinion of Seattle will be a little different.

Instead of going there with a prejudgment you should just go and see for yourself. In my opinion, people from Seattle are very friendly.
