As always I love your videos. I live in Raleigh NC and have grown a Prickly Pear Cactus and it has grown so big and flowers and fruits every year. At first, one leaf died and the other did well, I found out that when growing them in a cold climate I had to create a dirt mound with sand so that when it rained or snowed during the beginning growth it kept the leaf high and kept it from dying of mold. I wish mine would grow as tall as your neighbors, mine just spread out.
@billisherenc From what I read I think there's at least a dozen species of Prickly Pears. Thanks for the info about taking care of them in a cold/snowy climate! I'm sure some people are wondering if they can grow them in winter, but if you can, it can happen! =)
very cool, I think I might try that soon, all I have to do is find me a prickly pear cactus, I do know that there are alot of them on the side of the freeway heading to the west side of the island, would that be stealing? Hmmm!! I'll pretend to break down and grab me some under the cover of darkness....I'll just have to bust out my Ninja skills...Lol but mark my word, I will have some soon.... thanks alot for the idea. i love it... stay tuned!!! Aloha
That's cool I had 2 of those growing in my back yard when we moved in about a year and half ago but this year they both got some kind of fungus on them so I pulled one out and I'm working on getting the other one out too : (
nice job :) Gotta love cacti. Around here in Arizona they say to let the cacti callus over for about a week in a dark/cool spot, then dust the cut end with soil sulfur to prevent disease, however, like you I've had great luck just planting them.
Can you add this question to the avocado tree care video? If I grow an avocado tree indoors, will it bear fruit? Do you need more than one tree to cross polinate it? Thanks!
Really neat Jane. I had a chance to try those cactus pear once. They have a very light unique flavor, but there were just too many seeds for me to deal with - it became very annoying to eat. I think their seeds are much harder than a pomegranate's seeds. I do love cactus flower, but would never be brave enough to grow one of those ^_^
@4GreenEarth2 I am on the same boat as you. I'm not a big fan of those seed, either. I might try making a juice out of them or a smoothie perhaps. I just have to use a strainer to remove the seeds. They don't seem to be selling them anymore. Small window of opportunity to get my hands on them from the store. Happy that my neighbor has one growing! :)
Juicing them would be nice. Wish hubby can get me a juicer this X-mas - I think I'm going to sneak it in somehow. Making a jam out of them would be interesting.
Don't people plant those prickly pears down in the South to keep their neighbors out ? I don't think it would with you since you got attracted to it, hahahaha. J/K... Not really ^_^ Hugs.
Haha lets get another one!

@josephdupont yes you can root the fruits. They don't root as often, but they will root.

@billisherenc btw this is not a true prickley pear, it's a relative of the Opuntia.

@wmkk808 Know any ninjutsu? LOL! I don't think it's illegal if it's not in a private land. Just be careful and good luck!
