I only did this in MZM.But with Varia,bombs(not used),missles(used mostly),super missles(all),and barely any beams.And I killed him with about 2 energy tanks out of 7(in Ridley)

Apparently you can kill him faster by using the murder beam....

btw if you see closely enough,the door that appears on the left upper side is just the door you entered to get to Ridley.You can see that around the entrance.It's this grey stuff that is near the eye doors,which you have to defeat before entering the room.

It's necessary,even the way to Ridley has so much heated rooms that you would never survive long enough.You won't even reach him in time,right? :)

During the fight... Look at the top left. The tiles stand out, as if there's a door there.

Well, every time ingx shot the beam, it showed a secret door there! I really wonder, Where will it go? The secret worlds no one ever saw?
