  • Data being caught by a Chinese finger trap is ridiculous. he could have easily pulled it in half.

  • Data is so cute!

    "I am...stuck"

And everyone's just laughing at him XD

    Oh Data!

  • Hanging on to expectations that work against us is like trying to pull your fingers out of a Chinese finger trap. The more you yank and pull the tighter the damn thing traps your fingers. The trick is to keep calm, relax. Then your fingers slip out easily!

  • btw Data is sheldon cooper's twin! must be:P

  • Since when holograms have shadows?

  • @horaciosi as this is in the future holograms are 3D psychical object, today they are pictures. Later they will be touchable and a sort of object;)

  • A chess genius who can perform thousands of calculations a second can't work out the basic physics of a Chineese finger trap?

  • Seems like Brent Spiner can hardly holds his laughter.^^

  • Just join the fingers together and twist!

  • You think he could have at least broke it with his android strength...

  • @HWGuyEG lack of science knowledge!

  • Comment removed

  • I wonder how many takes this took. It had to be almost next to impossible to keep a straight face.

  • lol

  • I know that one simply can't act completely emotionless in every situation. It just can't be done all the time.

But I sort of have to point out that emotionless Data is acting sort of.... sheepish when he reveals that he's stuck. Maybe it's just that Picard's face is above his though, which is why he's looking up like that.

    But it still reads sheepish/embarrassed.

  • @moonlady3000 of course, data only thinks he dosn't have emotions.....

  • @physicsbugga Good point xD

  • @moonlady3000 In the earlier episodes they do not do a good job of canceling emotions for this character. later on they get better, but in many situations, it's obvious data feels something, even if it is done subtly or in a way he simply can't understand

  • It's times like these I wish it were Kirk and Data interacting, I can just image the look on Kirk's face...

  • "My Hero" lol!

  • This is a really cute moment [Spiner's expressions are priceless], but I wonder why Data the solution was not present among the vast stores of human knowledge within his positronic brain ....

  • Intriguing.

  • its funny how, an android, that could lift a 10 thousand pound dellurium beam with one hand and no problem, could not for the life of him get out of a little piece of paper.

That just goes to show the awesomeness of the chinese!

  • Intriguing...

  • "Im... stuck."

"well, then get un-stuck and continue with the briefing!"

  • I love Data so much!! <33

  • My hero! haha

  • "I'm ... stuck."

    That's hilarious xD

  • jajaj que bonito es..so cute!

  • Or maybe it was the 24th century equivalent to Carbon Fiber, and actually beyond his ability to 'tear apart'... :)

  • I wish there had been more moments like this in TNG and the other series.

  • @mknbfm DS9 is filled with that type of humor.

  • Maybe he just didn't want to break it because it wasn't his or something or because he wanted to keep it. : P I mean, if androids went around breaking everything that got in their way.. well.. that wouldn't be very nice, so I doubt his creator would've programmed him to be so destructive.

  • "My hero. *they both start laughing their asses off*" XD I LOVE Geordie

  • hehehe... I can easily get out of one of these but data cant. >:)

  • Even Data has difficultly with Chinese finger cuffs! Even though he has super-strength and an intellect which is beyond human capacity, he still has the same amount of difficulty with Chinese finger-cuffs as a human would!

  • Data is adorable.

  • So Data can bend a large piece of metal with ease (The Measure of a Man) but can't rip his fingers out of a paper tube?

  • who doesnt love an android who cant figure out a Chinese finger traps? 5 stars for Data!!

  • @ninjaandroid51 there aren't any stars anymore. you can only rate up or down. up is better. rating down on this will end in pain

  • @brown2912 so? its for data not for youtube

  • data's too smart to let a chinese finger trap keep him from explaining shit. even if he's stuck, he would still be capable of carrying on with his conversation without being all "wtf, my fingers hurrrrrrrr"

  • @newpageone He was doing fine it distracted Bicard more than anything.

  • Isn't Data like super strong he should've ripped that thing easily.

  • Riker looks so much better with beard

  • LOL LOL. So funny

  • best ever Star Trek clip!

  • @KyleGibbons91 sacrificing in order to overcome is purely logical. Chess is nothing but a game based on logical strategy. The chess computers nowadays are close to unbeatable, and surely data should be able to think ahead further than that with his positronic brain, right?^^ The fingertrap problem wasn't anything other than a simple physics problem, something an android as smart as data should be able to figure out in my opinion...

  • Picard was kind of a jerk here.

  • @thefinalfrontier1701 You're right... looking back, Picard was a jerk pretty much all the time in these early episodes in my opinion...

  • @9Robin1 yeah.. he was more "by the book" sort of speak.. like everything had to go as protocol..

  • "My Hero"

  • it annoys me when things in star trek are illogical. like data losing in chess to troi, them saying the probability of rolling a 6 in craps is the same as rolling a 7, and this finger trap thing... it just hurts...

  • @9Robin1 Technically, he didn't say the probability of rolling a 6 is the same as rolling a 7 . . . Riker said the probability of rolling a 6 is "no higher than that of rolling a 7," which is technically true, since it's lower, right? But I agree that he could have calculated how to escape the finger trap. Then again, there are times when he can calculate the answer but just doesn't choose the right approach, like with the Stratagema game (at first).

  • I think the 3D display messes with Data's processing power which is why they almost never use it :P

  • He didn't want to break it, Data primarily wants too learn about being human etc. he'd see this as a thing humans challenge one another with and would want to master it rather than taking the easy way out

  • @BethVidz

Makes you wonder if he broke a lot of stuff when he was first brought online and getting used to his body XD

  • IT'S A TRAP!!

  • @turb05 Sheldon Cooper is da man!

  • "get unstuck and continue with the briefing" Y SO SRS CAPTAIN????

  • Data is to cater to autistic people.

  • @rmeddy1. as are half the characters in Voyager.

  • Data is a kind and timid soul, who would never break someone's finger puzzle.

  • The 3D display, it was nice. Too bad they rarely used it

  • @talltom1973

I agree. More usage of 3D display would make A LOT MORE FUTURISTIC than it's supposed to be.

  • @ilovekorg It probably was expensive. On average they spent 1 million an episode, I believe. Just something I read a few years ago. I think Enterprise spent the same.

  • my hero

  • I wish they used those holograms more throughout the show.

  • That was the best ever.

  • @CheezitsGoRawr

I know. That was a rhetorical question aimed towards Rohan2300

  • I CAN UNDERSTAND THE UNIVERSE, I CAN PICK UP A BORG, BUT I'LL BE DAMNED IF I CAN'T FIGURE OUT THIS TRINKET

    Great stuff

  • LOL!!!!! XD

  • data... oh data, will you ever learn? "i am...uh...stuck." LOL

  • Awkward. . . .

  • "Intriguing" lol I love Data

  • Yeah, Star Trek was all about making smart people look dumb unless they had "feelings". Feelings make you SMART!!!! Actually, they do, but Star Trek has a crude way of making this point, in the same tradition of Spock the Vulcan. It was a humanistic moment, however unlikely for a creature like Data.

  • LOVE IT!!! Best part of a crappy episode, but you missed the bit at the end where Geordi gets stuck when Picard tells him to engage.

  • did they give that to him because it's just plan crewl! lol

  • Oh my....Data is such an adorable nerdy android. I love his deadpan face!

If he were to be real, I'd marry him. xD

  • ROTFL

  • Oh,thank god I can finally get that fucking thing off my finger, nah I am just kidding.

  • Doesn't he sound so adorably helpless when he says "stuck"?

  • "My hero". XD

  • Lol!!! I remember those, I was 4 and got one stuck on my fingers. I walked around for an hour crying until good ol' dad finally took it off.

  • Isn't data supposed to be amazingly strong? Strong enough to rip that shitty little thing appart?

  • @CAEDUSII

I don't think he wanted to break it.

  • @CAEDUSII you dont need to be amazingly strong to break them

  • @Ditre i know but still, data could easily rip that

  • @CAEDUSII if I had to guess...Data has a subroutine which limits his strength unless he deliberately overrides it....otherwise he'd be knocking dents in doors, breaking the LCARs screens and causing grievous bodily harm to half the people he meets on a daily basis :P

  • @Rohan2300 exactly, so how can he be stuck?

  • @CAEDUSII most likely he decided specifically that breaking the trap wasn't a valid solution....I mean, its a gift from a friend right?

  • @Rohan2300 i guess, but would he suffer guilt for breaking it?

  • BTW why did the holodisplay disappear after this episode, I love it!!

  • Why does Data always seem to make me lol?

  • Lol Geordi! MY HERO!

  • LOL "the solution eludes me...." how often do we here Data say that?? LOL :P

  • Jeeze, guys. Really?

Alright, yes, he could rip it in half and yes, he could calculate the answer in a nano-second.

It's just a joke. A cute little moment the writers added in to make people smile, alright?

  • @Bryan1108 even so, data might simply not know how the thing work, it's not like he sees past it, so in either cases it is realistic and funny =)

  • @Bryan1108 a joke, yes, but i don't believe that it's unrealistic. it looks like the trap caught data by surprise, and he wanted to try to find the correct way out, not the easy way.... ;)

  • @Bryan1108 So.... you can tie him with rope, put iron cuffs on him, or hit him with a rock, but the only way to stop him is to give him a chinese finger trap. Noice.

  • @Bryan1108 it made you smile, did it not.......

  • @Bryan1108

He couldn't solve it. Because the solution is based on an ancient Chinese principle of 'coming together to solve a problem' and that kind of human logic would better him.

  • @Bryan1108

meh sometimes people want to overanalyze everything and completely miss the entire point of a humorous little scene. XD My favs: This one and where Data asks Worf to care for his cat and the cat gets sneezed on XD

  • @Bryan1108 LOL...this is great, especially with Picard sounding so impatient!

    Data: "I am, uh, stuck..."

    Picard: "Then get unstuck."

Data: "...that is what I am trying to do, sir, but the solution eludes me."

    Geordi: "My hero." (LOLs)

  • @Bryan1108 He seemed more interested in finding the solution to the problem. Typical Data

  • @Bryan1108 No, he cant rip it in half. The original finger traps were made of bamboo, a grass stronger then steel.

  • My hero! Lol geordi lol data lol picard

  • Man, I should hit myself upside the head for that one :$!

  • pffff whatEVER. I've seen data force the doors on the holodeck open. no way a chinese finger trap would hold him. he'd rip it in two without thinking

    Still... very, very funny :)

  • Thanks for the vote of confidence Geordi xD

Get your ass back to engineering!

  • i like how they make foreigners and robots retarded in shows

  • He's not retarded. Data is just a droid who learns new stuff every single day, considering he didn't have a literal childhood. So a finger trap is something he wanted to learn about :P.

  • but if the fingertrap was madeout of, i dont know, nanoflux matter, then his brain can calculate the exact spot to BREATHE on it to turn it into a robotic butterfly, though, right? paper physics is just BEYOND Data......

  • Was this really in the show, or was it an outtake? It's been so long ago that I forgot, lol.

  • part of the show

  • It was really in the show. In the "More Info" section, it gives the episode from which the clip is taken :)

  • It sure was in the show! It was the best part of the episode! And Geordi had the best line: "My hero!" LOLOL!!!!

  • It just seemed out of character, with all of them laughing like that. I'm curious which writer thought it up, or if it was just something that happened and they said, "Hey, that's great -- let's leave it in!," lol.

  • Dunno. Then again, knowing Brent, maybe it was his idea.

  • *Sputters then LOLS* Oh, yeah!!!

  • "Then get unstuck and continue with the briefing..."

    (unsticks Data from the trap)

    "Continue Commander"

  • Lol at Geordi, "My Hero!"

  • Well, funny clip but Data could have easily ripped it to shreds should he seriously tried!

  • True, but he was a little more gentle when he was younger.

  • LOL WTF!!!!! LMFAO!

  • omg i never thought data would meet something stronger then him, I MUST GET ONE OF THOSE !!!!!!

  • I love Data!

But I also love Riker. Can't decide wheter he looks hotter with or without the beard :P

  • I know me too! Riker is so hot. I think he looks better wtih the beard personally. No, maybe without it... OH I DON'T KNOW!

  • PWNED!

  • Lol i love tht scene. next to where worf is giving wes love advice.

  • now, a an android wouldn't he just have to go through his files and figure out how to get unstuck? or something?...

  • Is it just me or does Riker look like Kirk without a beard? Oh well very funny lol

  • IMO, he looks more like Dr.McCoy.

  • "My hero."

LOL!! That was a classic TNG moment, this is great, thanks for posting!

  • Picard has no sense of humour.

  • Actually if you watch teh bloopers lol then he does, heha :) But in the series true.

  • I am a... stuck.

Then get unstuck and continue with the briefing.

    lol

  • wheres rikers beard??

  • in season one he doesn't have a beard. i like his A LOT more without a beard... wish he hadn't grown one. ):

  • I think he looks more masculine with the beard, he looked like an underwear model in season one. :p

  • but a beautiful model

  • *heehee* Can't deny that.

  • The first season (or two I forget) he didn't have a beard. He planned to shave his beard for filming the next season of TNG but then attended a convention with Gene Roddenberry. Roddenberry asked the fans what they thought of his beard. After they cheered he asked him to keep it.

  • Hi It was only for the first season that Riker didnt have a beard, he got it in the second. I never knew thought that the fans wanted him to keep it, strange. lol :)

  • In my opinion, he's one of the few men I've seen that looks better with facial hair.

Usually, I think that men look the same or better clean shaven.

  • Mmmm, He look really young in the first season without the beard, but then in the movie Insurection, he shaves it agin for Deana Troi, and I think that he looks better then than on the first season... he who cares? lol :)

  • Not intriguing...Fascinating :D

  • Data knew it was a childs toy, there had to be a trick or solution on how to get his fingers free.Using his great strength on such a little toy was overkill

  • Everyone thinks it's so funny. XD

Geordi wants to laugh so bad. >>

  • he could very easy break it, looks like director forgot about that.

  • he didn't want to break it.

  • his face looks like he haven't got enough strength, besides picard gave him order to unstock, and even that he could very easy replicate it after breake.

  • @kardentyrell exactly! data is too gentle to break it something that's not his :)

  • It wouldnt be funny if he would break it.

Dont take these things to seriously it would

destroy all fantasy if everything would be rational

    and realistic.

  • Yes if he bitches about something like this, how can he watch this when the laws of physics are flawed :p.

    It's just a tv show!

  • no he cant these Chinese are crafty bastards

  • Don't feel bad Data that happened to me the first time...*headdesk* Tkong

  • "My hero!" hahahaha!!!

  • DATA:I am, uh... stuck.

PICARD:Then get unstuck and continue with the briefing.

"Star Trek" knows how to be funny.

  • yes i know thats wolverine but on one episode data just headbutted a klingon so hes gotta have somethin in his fingers

  • Intriguing.

  • rofl you got adamintine or whatever in your fingers data you should be able to rip that thing right off

  • ROFLWAFFLES Thats Wolverine, silly.

  • you gotta love data lol

  • star trek experience finished in vegas hilton last year. i was there for the final day. Has it reopened anywhere else in vegas ?

  • i accidentally marked u as spam. ugh my clumsy fingers. math....ew.....i say math is evil.

  • he'd me my reason too *giggle* i'veen a fan since i was 3 in 1990...and there goes my typing skills again....anyway, everytime i saw Data on i'd stop dead in my tracks and stare at the tv, hehe!

  • this month this soon??!!! ohhh my gosh ackkkk i didn't know this! (does that mean he's not going to the vegas star trek convention this yr? any info would e great, excuse typos)
