Do they train to use any kind of box or something? Can they roam free in a house like other small animals if so? I'm wanting a pet that will get attached to me, I live alone and have heard they are very affectionate. Is this correct?
Before any of you go out and buy one because they're cute and cuddly critters, do your research! I spent 3 years reading about these little guy before i got 2 and learn something new everyday.
@KirbyPeachFan40 I'm not a breeder, but I do know some things. If I'm not confident I can answer your questions, I'll send you in the direction of someone who can. :)
@Beezjee24 If anything they need to be WAY more strict about exotic pet laws, but I'm mostly thinking about those insane people who have lions, bears, tigers, chimps, etc. Having rats, chinchillas, ferrets, and smaller animals like that isn't a problem to me personally, as long as they are cared for properly.
@87banshee1 They're illegal in California. No reputable breeder will sell one to you, and it would be difficult to find vet care for them, given that you would have to find a very trustworthy vet. If you're caught with them, they will be confiscated and euthanized. Don't get one unless you leave Cali.
@laundry9870 They're illegal in California. You cannot even obtain a permit to own one legally. They're 100% illegal, and if someone finds out and reports that you own them, they can/will be confiscated. Sometimes they'll give you up to 48 hours to find them a home somewhere where they're legal, but more often than not, they will take them and put them to sleep.
@BizzareAlbino Kind of. Their body structure is built for hard landings. They can glide up to a football field's length in the wild, and land on a tree. I imagine that's not the softest landing. ;)
@LiveLoveLax97 Because they're so neglected with a wheel to run in to their heart's desire, fed a nutritious diet, toys to play with, no need to be afraid of getting eaten by predators, and having warm and cozy pouches to sleep in. Such a horrible life.
@MrOzzyPom Thats not natural, its like a whale living in a aquarium, they are kept alive and healthy, but not in their natural habitat with other wild animals.
This young girl is doing great taking care of her gliders. I can tell she did her research becuase she turned her hamster ball into a bed. Hamster balls are dangerous for gliders to run in, so most people who make that mistake are told to just use it as a nest. Second, The bathroom is a good place to give your glider exercise and a good place to bond with them. People have been playing with their gliders in the bath room for years and I have yet to hear of any of them dying, So do your research
U seem like a good pet owner and they like u but dont take em out if they don't won't to they don't like that they will come to you when they won't to or u can take them out only if they don't try to hold on to something or try to stay in the cage but they ain't mine so u can do wat ever u want just a tip
quick question: are sugar gliders really affectionate? I know other small animals like pet mice are really only motivated by food and such, but it seems like sugar gliders are more intelligent
@Killerrayzz yes, suggies are very affectionate if you bond with'em. They are very intelligent, if you tie a nylon rope and pt it in their cage, they'll untie it for fun. It's really cool.
I want a sugar bear really really badly, i just have a few questions; Where would be the best place to get a nice, healthy, well treated baby sugar glider, and how do they fair during the night when you're trying to sleep? Since they're nocturnal, aren't they a pest?
i seriously doubt it. how many times have you seen a squirrel fall and hurt itself? ok, now how many times have you seen a squirrel with the equivalent of a tiny little parachute fall and hurt itself?
@pollordubai yaa but you should have alot of patience, dont run behind them cuz they're gonna think you want to hurt them, and males they can think you want to mating with them ahahaha funny but truth
@TubeTrollster Sugar gliders should never have a 'bath.' The closest thing to a bath they should have is a wipe down with a warm, wet cloth, and that's only if they manage to dive in an open cup of orange juice or something. They normally do a good job at keeping themselves clean - and if not, it's probably time for a trip to the vet.
@MakiMaki962047 What about in nature? I know they get caught in rainstorms...my sister's bird loves to get gently showered...I wonder if sugar gliders would like that occasionally? I know if I don't shower for 2 days, my smell can be described as sweet and musky LOL
@MakiMaki962047 Very true! My sugar glider did a very good job of grooming herself until one day she stopped. We took her to the vet and found out she was very sick and thats why she wasn't grooming herself. We would wash her up every few days while we were nursing her back to health, but that was with a warm cloth, And afterwards, we made sure to wrap her up and make her warm.
@RachaelNicolexD because its just like the british coming to take the indians land, the indians all got sick from the "new" bacteria that the british bodies were used to.
Our bodies are used to the bacteria and can fend them off with our immune system because they've been introduced to us before. The sugar gliders may have not been introduced to the bacteria of virus so there immune system doesn't know how to fight it so the could get sick or even die.
@MetalWarzoneFilms well den i aint be gettin 1 cuz i aint wanna smell dem smellin like undouched puss!..my sister gives her bird a shower...it loves it cuz birds like showers in da rain..im pretty sure sugar gliders get wet and shower in da rain too...but w/e u these pet peeps aint know what they talkin bout i bet their vet say it ok to spray them down in shower sometimes but they prolly not even wash demselves let alone dere gliders...shoot...i know datz rite
@TubeTrollster You should look up HOW to take care of them. Don't assume they're going to NEED a bath. You never have to wash them. They clean themselves like a cat, and cats don't smell.
@TubeTrollster Sugar gliders don't know how to swim and will drowned that is why you have to be aware of things like toilets that are opened drain pipes in sinks that don't have guards on them and even containers that may have liquid in them that are around your house.
What ninja is trying to say is the distance isn't high enough for the glider to get to a full glide its more of a fall because they have to fall quite a few feet to start their "glide" otherwise they kinda plop.
dude that is a fucking scary looking animal. not cute at all. looks like what the grandchild would look like if a possum fucked a squirrel and their kid ended up fucking a bat.
lol awwww they are sooo cute even though i belive all wild animals should be left alone in the wild alot of people do take good care of these amazing animals and i can see you take great care with yours. awsome job.
@Condor1616 They don't really stink, but they do have a slight sweet, musky smell to them. They'll only 'stink' if you go without cleaning their cage for a while.
I'm so jealous.... I've done my research because I'd been wanting a couple. But they can't go outside to play or they'll escape lol. My ratties were good with not straying far from me. I loved taking them to fairs and things when it wasn't too cold or hot outside. They'd sit on my shoulder and we'd get funny looks from strangers. <3 Sugar gliders though... CUTE!
@23ballababy The hamster ball is a hideout, not something for them to run around in. (I'd be amazed if they'd be able to run around in that, LOL). But no, they're not supposed to actually be able to run around in them. They can get their toes caught in the little air slits.
@MakiMaki962047 haha. i put mine in one all the time. If ive got to do stuff and want them out of the cage i put them in theirs. lol. they seem to love it.
@MakiMaki962047 yea. It can. I meant i keep a eye on them but when i dont want them crawling all over me when im trying to do stuff. they love it. Every since i got them i have put them in it. atleast once a day. lol. I put them separate and the r so cute because they follow each other.
@Mr291229 Depends - they're not cheap though. You have to take into consideration not only the cost of the glider, but the cage, food, vet bills, etc. Plus they're a 15 year commitment - that adds up over time.
@MultiGamesfreak I got them for $100 off of CraigsList. They were very unsocialized and I spent months of my hands looking like hamburger meat from them biting me so much and had to work with them A LOT. I would recommend getting them from reputable breeders; they normally cost $150 per glider, but they are well socialized with people so you don't have to go through that.
@Nuffskillz1 You should always get at least two. Many reputable breeders will ship their gliders. I had my leu shipped from Tennessee to Arizona. They sleep the whole way. :)
@yoshiwab Kinda, sorta, not really. Once you establish a bond, they learn to trust you and they want to be with you. So it's sort of like training, but it's more they want to be with me. :p
why are you breathing like you just ran a marathon?

@23ballababy The hamster ball is a hideout, not something for them to run around in. (I'd be amazed if they'd be able to run around in that, LOL). But no, they're not supposed to actually be able to run around in them. They can get their toes caught in the little air slits.

@MakiMaki962047 haha. i put mine in one all the time. If ive got to do stuff and want them out of the cage i put them in theirs. lol. they seem to love it.
jttlr101 1 year ago
@jttlr101 It can be dangerous if they're running in it. If you can't watch them, they shouldn't be out.
MakiMaki962047 1 year ago
@MakiMaki962047 yea. It can. I meant i keep a eye on them but when i dont want them crawling all over me when im trying to do stuff. they love it. Every since i got them i have put them in it. atleast once a day. lol. I put them separate and the r so cute because they follow each other.

@MakiMaki962047 How much does a sugar glider cost?
Mr291229 1 year ago
@Mr291229 Depends - they're not cheap though. You have to take into consideration not only the cost of the glider, but the cage, food, vet bills, etc. Plus they're a 15 year commitment - that adds up over time.

how much did they cost?
MultiGamesfreak 1 year ago
@MultiGamesfreak I got them for $100 off of CraigsList. They were very unsocialized and I spent months of my hands looking like hamburger meat from them biting me so much and had to work with them A LOT. I would recommend getting them from reputable breeders; they normally cost $150 per glider, but they are well socialized with people so you don't have to go through that.

I Want To Get A SugarGlider In Ny Queens But I dont KNow Where To Buy One
Nuffskillz1 1 year ago
@Nuffskillz1 You should always get at least two. Many reputable breeders will ship their gliders. I had my leu shipped from Tennessee to Arizona. They sleep the whole way. :)

Nateby101 1 year ago
@Nateby101 Depends on how you look at it. Not cheap, in the long run. Cage, vet bills, food, etc. are the most expensive part to owning them.

you can't keep them in a ball
marksgernade 1 year ago
@marksgernade It's not for them to run around in. It's more for them to sleep in. I put fleece blankets in it.

lol did u train it??????????????????
yoshiwab 1 year ago
@yoshiwab Kinda, sorta, not really. Once you establish a bond, they learn to trust you and they want to be with you. So it's sort of like training, but it's more they want to be with me. :p
