My personal opinion on the whole Lydon sellout thing: Punk (and post-punk, I guess) was simply doing whatever the hell you wanted to do. It isn't a set of rules, and when it becomes such (i.e. Don't Make A Commercial For A Large Company), then Punk really is dead.
P.I.L. had a brief creative spark that was all about trying to do something anti-rock 'n' roll & the chemistry between Lydon, Levene, Wobble & Atkins. it's great that this old clip is still attracting so much debate. I can't support the vast majority of "charities" because I know that my contribution will end up funding political groups and activities that I am strongly against. Most charities represent the idea of selflessness without accomplishing any real good, change but not progress, and often only serve as a way to make people feel good about themselves, without actually doing any good.
Your logic eliminates the very possibility of honest motivation. But It is about more than just motivation. John is trying to inspire you to be honest by making it look easy. It doesnt matter if he profits from his behavior, he would do it anyways because he wants you to imagine youself doing it.
It is about being less trusting, more trustworthy, and thinking for yourself.

You can see Lydon't interest switch off right at the point Snyder's mentions the Pistols. From that point on, Lydon and Levene become performance artists, with TS as their unwitting accomplice. Despite everything, kind of feel bad for Snyder, who was usually effective and conducting intelligent interviews; and his frustrated rant at the two during commercial was understandable.

Why did they agree to be interviewed at all?
If they (he, Johnny) wanted nothing to do with an interview like that, they should've just declined the offer.
It appears that Levene and Snyder are trying to conduct an interview, but Lydon, acting like a spoiled child, is just sabotaging the whole thing.
Second only to Yoko Ono, PiL is the most unpleasant "music" I've ever heard. If, as someone commented earlier, they were trying to destroy music, then BRAVO, job done.

i think snyder, being a generic tv presenter in the u.s., has enough patience to produce an interesting interview. i was surprised. the ideas put through, particularly by the levene, are really an ideal for what music could be, even today, when some believe that everything has been done.

My personal opinion on the whole Lydon sellout thing: Punk (and post-punk, I guess) was simply doing whatever the hell you wanted to do. It isn't a set of rules, and when it becomes such (i.e. Don't Make A Commercial For A Large Company), then Punk really is dead.

P.I.L. had a brief creative spark that was all about trying to do something anti-rock 'n' roll & the chemistry between Lydon, Levene, Wobble & Atkins. it's great that this old clip is still attracting so much debate. They wanted to be a company because they wanted to have complete control.
They dont want to support anything that they are against, so they dont want to have to suck up to any sponsors or worry about pollitical correctness. They just want to be as free as possible from any potential conflicts of interest so that they can have thier heart in what they are doing.

John makes it clear that he wants to talk about Pil! and the future! then that interviewer for some dumb reason? mentions the past again! and John clears off! its funny :)

You can see Lydon't interest switch off right at the point Snyder's mentions the Pistols. From that point on, Lydon and Levene become performance artists, with TS as their unwitting accomplice. Despite everything, kind of feel bad for Snyder, who was usually effective and conducting intelligent interviews; and his frustrated rant at the two during commercial was understandable.
