I absolutely disliked cloverfield. It was as if it couldn't make up its mind what kind of film it wanted to be. Horror, sci fi, thriller, love story etc. Way too much went unexplained and for the life of me I couldn't find a singular plot line.

I finally got around to seeing it, the movie that is, and I was really disappointed.

On the other hand I couldn't help but give kudos to Phil Tippit and his crew for their visual effects. Ol' Phil has come a long way from animating the Tauntaun's in The Empire Strikes Back.

Hey Dave! Holloywood (both TV and movies) have always been about grabbing onto the popular and trying to utilize it for profit. I take it as a badge of honor that they had found this format worthy of a feature film. Remember, the Blair Witch Project was not people documenting their lives. It was kids trying to make a documentary.

This style, though, will not take over Hollywood. Trust me. Plus, YT-type vlogging will always be YT-type vlogging.

So let not your heart be troubled. :D

LOL... best review I've seen. I agree with pretty much everything you said. I actually thought they did something interesting to help develop the characters by using the Coney Island footage here and there, but it still wasn't enough. I did thoroughly enjoy the film but I think there's plenty of room for improvement.

I think that by the time they tried adding the Coney Island footage, the action was alreay too far along and my feelings toward (or lack of feelings toward) the characters was already set.

But they did choose a VERY difficult style to convey background stories, etc. So they handcuffed themselves from the start in that area.

BUT it works GREAT for the action scenes (see the opening of Saving P. Ryan)!!!
