As a little boy i sucked my thumb. And One night my grandpa runned in my room. Dressed as the Taylor with a Big pair of scissors. I was so scarred. But Today the taylors my favourite character.
Up to a couple of nights ago I'd never heard of The Tiger Lillies. I saw them on SKY, Arts program and couldn't get enough. After watching many videos on You Tube, I would love to see them live. Such Talent. They say they won't be shown on British television, but I'm sure there must be a slot for them, maybe not on Blue Peter, but I'm sure they would get a great following in the right spot.
@mislabeledracoon not as bad as ring around the rosey which is about the black plague or how about she'll be comming around the mountain and polly wolly doodle they are both about Jack the Ripper victims
@EGPMH while ring around the rosy is about the black plague, neither She'll be coming round the mountain or Polly wolly doodle is about Jack the Ripper victims. Polly wolly doodle was first published in 1880, and Jack the Ripper was only active during 1888. She'll be coming round the mountain is based on an old African American Spiritual about the Second Coming. Though there are many different versions of the lyrics, the "She" in the song is thought to be union organizer Mary Harris Jones.
we have stories with wolves taking bad kids. and i recall that my mom was asking me to play the wolf part, from a diffrent room, in order to convince my baby-brother to take his after-noon nap :)
@sunetemov goldly locks and the three bears originally had the bears eat her and remeber red riding hooding the wolf eats her grandma and before he can eat red the woodsman (logger) comes in and cuts the wolf open letting the grandma out
and then there is pinocco and alice in wonerland with all the drug and murder referances

I lived in Germany as a kid and was freaked out by the weirdness and brutality of these stories. Nevertheless, I don't think the Tiger Lillies capture the sentiment of this kind of folklore, they are more using it as a means to expound their own brand of oddness, which seems to be weird just for the sake of being weird.
For us, it was "le Bonhomme Sept-Heure". A dark figure of a man who lurked in the night looking for children to eat who didn't go to sleep early enough. Turns out, Albert Fish had been dead for years! What a fool I was!
My mom gave me Struwwelpeter to read as a child because I never wanted to cut my nails or hair. No wonder I'm so fucked up. Now I love the Tiger Lillies. So, listen up moms. We become depraved psychopaths when you give us that filthy shit to read. But, I digress. What is this footage from? I like the interview and I want more! MORE!
i very much agree...my grandmother told me these stories when i was little and they scared the crap out of me. this show was amazing, i loved everything about it!
I am surprised someone remembers or knows Jacques Brel. He was so incredible. I am going to search here to see if I find a video of his. I never saw him, I just have one double CD set.

I saw them years ago at Savoy Theatre in Helsinki, Finland. They were totally great, as beinf the part of the play Shockheaded Peter. I even got their cd from that gig. So thank you, it really makes you believe in art and freedom of creativity!
like closing in on you ???. I saw them in a local folk club in north wales (mate of mine booked them) brilliant artists but it was a bit much for a few who were seen banging there heads on a wall and shrieking in horror

the story is from Der Struwwelpeter (sp?) a book of German stories that all involve children disobeying their parents and subsequently dying. Lovely.

Great artists!
I love this song, especially because my name is Konrad :)
As you probably know, the piece is an interpretation of a German children's book.
When I was a kid people would mock me by reciding the beginning of this poem: "Konrad, sprach die Frau Mama..."
I was so terrified by this story, that I never even had the idea of sucking my thumb.
Some years ago I went to a Tiger Lillies concert with my friend Philipp... guess what: his favorite song is Fidgety Phil :)
