Granny Tenderstone, I heard this song when I was in college (I'm a little older than you are) and it stuck with me. I had a lot of fun making the video. I could do a better job now, so maybe I'll do an updated version one of these days.
To clear up the confusion: This song is a response to Merle Haggard's huge hit "Okie From Muscogee". It even references Haggard at the end. Then Kinky Friedman weighed in with "Asshole From El Paso".
@MalokinMartin wasn't this an answer to merle's okie? everything i have found online says that okie was first. what about the line: strangers if they're haggard?
On the allmusic site, this song is described as a "dated" takeoff on Merle Haggard's "Okie from Muskogee," but that's really underestimating it! I just finished hearing it for the first time now, and while it certainly is relevant today, the bigger and better point is: It's a great, funny little song! Thanks for making it possible for me to experience this gem!
@nosleep62 I suppose it could be called "dated" because of how long ago it was recorded, but I think it's definitely still fresh and funny. Thanks for watching.
It wasn't a "takeoff", it was more of a Rebuttal to Mr Haggards song

How did I get to be 55 without EVER hearing this answer to Okie from Muskogee? I admit I still love the Okie song but this is where MY heart lies!!!
