Protein is needed for the 8 amino acids that your body cant produce. It helps recover your muscles recover. Note, it takes 3-5 days for your muscles to recover. Your body cant store these amino acids so you need a constant intake of protein every 3-5 hours. like 15-30g or something like that depending on your weight.
You can get your protein from a healthy meal, protein shakes just help you get taht 15-30g every 3-5 hours.

You don't need excessive protein unless you're a weight training athlete or large body builder. A normal balanced diet is all you need, and a FUCK load of exercise.

You actually dont need to use protien because your muscles will grow eitger way, except the protien heals them faster n makes them bigger, so its alot better than not takin it
Don't forget to add some glutamine after a workout with your shake, this way your muscles heal much faster. Check out my profile for a link to an article that covers a great workout program. I gained almost 30 pounds in half a year using these methods.

ya if its sold at GNC for sure you can put it in you. We have a GNC on our base here so I mean if you can buy on base then its okay. I know they did just pull Novadex (on base) b/c a pilot got a false positive but protein and weight gainer wise you're fine.
just make a gallon of green tea in a milk jug with NO SUGAR and like 5 tea bags or so.. and add that to your shakes instead of water.. youll barely taste it and itll be super good for you.. thats what ive been doin.. itll be healthy as long as theres no added sugar
20 grams whey, 5 grams creatine, 2 packets of plain oatmeal(40 grams carbs), 5 grams each of taurine, creatine, and glutamine. you can substitute a carb powder for the oatmeal, just get the 2:1 carbs:protein.

I go 5 times a week and work my full upper body which takes me about 1hr 30mins - 2hrs including a 5min warmup on the static bike. I do 3 sets, 8-10reps on each using weightes where i fail on rep 9-10... then on the third set i usually burnout using smaller weights.
eggs chicken and fish are 7 times more effective than protien shakes so stop wastes money on protien powder and spend your extra cash on real food from mother nature not chemicals that will have you farting all day

I take a shake once I work up, and one just about immediately after. I take my protein with me to the gym, and I mix my shake right after I hit the weights. I also eat ALOT of chicken(no beef, bad for ya in the long run.) Use WHEY. Its the BEST protein available. I went from 235 and slightly flabby, to 260 and leanrt in less than a years time(started lifting about 8 months ago.) Dont do milk! Drink your shake with water! Its unwanted fat, and its protein content is minimal to say the least.
Nah, milk is excellent for skinny guys who are bulking (like me). Drink a litre of it and thats over 500 calories + 35g of protein. Good stuff! (especially when mixed with whey protein)
yeah, I learned some things since i posted that comment. I still don't drink milk though, because I don't want to pack on any fat. I just want the protein t o fuel the muscles. I drink it with my cereal though. Also, if you are drinking alot of milk like that, (especially if you are taking creatine products) I strongly suggest you up your water intake something serious, because you don't want to develop kidney stones from the extra calcium and creatinine. It is recommended to take your post workout shake within half an hour after your workout..basically you have a 2 hours window after your workout whereby your body is most effective at delivering and absorbing proteins into your muscle..whey protein isolate will take approximately half an hour to digest..so it's best to have your post workout shake no later than half an hour after your workout..hope that helps..
Of course it will still help in developing and repairing muscle..but it would be less effective..after your workout..blood is concentrated in the muscle groups you have just worked out..that is why you can still feel the muscle pump even though you're done with your workout..this is the most effective period to take your protein drink as your blood is most effective at delivering nutrients to your muscles..

The U.S. spends the most money in the world to advertise milk for "stronger bones", when in fact the U.S. leads the world with the most cases of osteoporosis. Its all business. (I'm in pre-med).

I'd put Americans high instance of it more down to a rise in obesity and sedentary lifestyles etc. It's the result of your over all health... not just drinking milk! :D
If you're male and trying to put on more muscle, do NOT drink soy milk...it boosts estrogen levels. I personally would go with a type of Lactaid milk (its a little more expensive, but tastes sweeter and contains lactase...makes digesting the milk ALOT easier). The healthier overall route, sorry to say, would be to drop cereal altogether, and go for oatmeal.
@giu2085, you can Google "should cats drink milk", and there's plenty of info on the subject. Cow's milk has no nutritional value for cats and harms their digestive tract in the long run. The only reason household cats drink milk is because their owners put it in front of them. Not to sound like a smart-ass at all, I'm all about sharing the right info with everyone...it just sux the milk industry and its marketing scheme bombards the public with falsehoods. Hope this helps.

Genetics, diet, exercise (or lack of), intestinal/ kidney/ thyroid/ parathyroid problems, alcohol, smoking, etc. I'm just saying milk does NOT help in preventing the condition, which is contrary to what they advertise. (See OneSteveUnderGod's post few comments down). I've personally drank milk 2-3 times EVERY day thruout childhood up til I was 20. It's been 12 yrs since I quit, and my body feels awesome. The others can take dairy all day every day - but at their own health expense. The Midwest is the dairy belt of the U.S., & they have the highest rate of obesity. I personally have drank barrels of milk from birth til I turned 20. And when I stopped, my stomach/digestive cramps stopped, and my athletic performance improved considerably. Knowledge is power. You don't need a post workout protein shake, but it can definitely help if you are trying to maximize your muscle building potential and you want something quick and easy. However, a protein shake will do you know good if your diet is out of whack. They are made to enhance your muscle building diet, not replace it.
Some of them do and some of them don't. Protien powder is just whey left over from the cheese making process. It's as 'natural' as any other food.
ideally your protien intake should come from pure food sources, but using a shake to SUPPLIMENT your diet isn't a bad thing.
Again - some people do and some people don't. If you're time rich enough to bea able to eat chicken/tuna/soya etc 4-5 times a day then more power to you.

the only known side effects really are due to the increased amount of protein in your diet after drinking protein shakes, you go to the toilet alot more, fart alot more etc. Personally, i think a good thing to do its mix up some flax seed or something in some porridge, flax seed is high in protein and fibre, and the porridge is high in carbohydrate. However you cant make some porridge after a gym session unless the gym is near a kitchen :P
you want big muscle try this soy milk mint leaf straberryes one egg mix it and drink this is more powerfull and natural, workout every 48 hours and you dont need powders
I see the idea behind my post workout shake is getting WPI in which is fast absorbing to allow me to get protein in the 1-2hour window of opportunity where my muscles are especially hungry from protein and carbs. Its proven to greatly help in protein synthesis. No grocery item will give you WPI unless its in a tub.
Who the fuck is going to drink a glass of chocolate milk after lifting....I mean, I know you said "working out", but anybody with serious protein needs is NOT going to go home and mix up some chocolate milk.
He should recommend fish, steak, etc. for post workout or a shake as a supplement, which is okay!

NIGGA! of course you want to drink a protein shake after you work out, and especially if it has amino acid, hopefully including the eaa's and bcaa's because they are important to consume no later than 30mins after your workout. but the protein mixes with that shit is usually pricey so i would just buy some expensive stuff with the aa's and use that only after you workout and then use a cheaper brand of protein mix throughout he day if you need to drink some to meet your daily prot. requrement

protien in general is metabolically active, so the more lean muscle mass you have in your body, the more calories your body burns per day. Taking a suplement after workout helps you recover and builds up muscle. Pound of muscle burna bout 50 calories a day while a pound of fat burns about 2.

protein foods take longer to digest so you should stave off hunger for longer with protein compared to carbs so no hunger = you ll eat less crap.
you would need to eat a lot of protein to gain weight compared to eating carbohydrates. if you check the info on your food cans n such you will see that protein food have much less calories than carbs.

I go 5 times a week and work my full upper body which takes me about 1hr 30mins - 2hrs including a 5min warmup on the static bike. I do 3 sets, 8-10reps on each using weightes where i fail on rep 9-10... then on the third set i usually burnout using smaller weights.

I take a shake once I work up, and one just about immediately after. I take my protein with me to the gym, and I mix my shake right after I hit the weights. I also eat ALOT of chicken(no beef, bad for ya in the long run.) Use WHEY. Its the BEST protein available. I went from 235 and slightly flabby, to 260 and leanrt in less than a years time(started lifting about 8 months ago.) Dont do milk! Drink your shake with water! Its unwanted fat, and its protein content is minimal to say the least.

yeah, I learned some things since i posted that comment. I still don't drink milk though, because I don't want to pack on any fat. I just want the protein t o fuel the muscles. I drink it with my cereal though. Also, if you are drinking alot of milk like that, (especially if you are taking creatine products) I strongly suggest you up your water intake something serious, because you don't want to develop kidney stones from the extra calcium and creatinine. I read that somewhere on the net.

It is recommended to take your post workout shake within half an hour after your workout..basically you have a 2 hours window after your workout whereby your body is most effective at delivering and absorbing proteins into your muscle..whey protein isolate will take approximately half an hour to digest..so it's best to have your post workout shake no later than half an hour after your workout..hope that helps..

Of course it will still help in developing and repairing muscle..but it would be less effective..after your workout..blood is concentrated in the muscle groups you have just worked out..that is why you can still feel the muscle pump even though you're done with your workout..this is the most effective period to take your protein drink as your blood is most effective at delivering nutrients to your muscles..

Milk is naturally not good for adults. As our bodies mature, we no longer produce the enzymes (lactase) necessary to breakdown milk protein (lactose). Humans are the only mammals on earth that voluntarily drink milk in adulthood. The U.S. spends the most money in the world to advertise milk for "stronger bones", when in fact the U.S. leads the world with the most cases of osteoporosis. Its all business. (I'm in pre-med).

If you're male and trying to put on more muscle, do NOT drink soy milk...it boosts estrogen levels. I personally would go with a type of Lactaid milk (its a little more expensive, but tastes sweeter and contains lactase...makes digesting the milk ALOT easier). The healthier overall route, sorry to say, would be to drop cereal altogether, and go for oatmeal.

The only reason household cats drink milk is because their owners put it in front of them. The others can take dairy all day every day - but at their own health expense. The Midwest is the dairy belt of the U.S., & they have the highest rate of obesity. ideally your protien intake should come from pure food sources, but using a shake to SUPPLIMENT your diet isn't a bad thing.

the main reason why u take whey powders after an anaerobic workout is because the muscles have been "damaged"or"torn" by the workout since whey powders are 100%they will be absorbed faster than lets say chicken 4 example which is only30%or so whey and you dont want 2 delay that absorption either.a good whey pro. powder and one that i personally recommend would be100%WHEY GOLD STANDARD by ON(optimum nutrition)which contains the BCAA's(essential amino acids) that are most benefi. for the muscles.

the only known side effects really are due to the increased amount of protein in your diet after drinking protein shakes, you go to the toilet alot more, fart alot more etc. Personally, i think a good thing to do its mix up some flax seed or something in some porridge, flax seed is high in protein and fibre, and the porridge is high in carbohydrate. However you cant make some porridge after a gym session unless the gym is near a kitchen :P

I see the idea behind my post workout shake is getting WPI in which is fast absorbing to allow me to get protein in the 1-2hour window of opportunity where my muscles are especially hungry from protein and carbs. Its proven to greatly help in protein synthesis. No grocery item will give you WPI unless its in a tub.
