We all are afraid of following in our parents footsteps. Wether they did good or bad we all want to make our own way. Our paths may be an extension of their own we want to define it but somehow everytime we end up doing through the same shit. It's a human thing. The cling wrap is symbolism. Without your legs even in water you are helpless even if you know how to do the dolphin kick, it was her decision to control her path, liberation from her mother's path.
I think that this girl is depicted as your "typical teenage girl"
and her boyfriend was much like a typical teenage boy too.
GREAT ACTORS =D!
The part where he doesn't respond to her seriously when she tells him he's sick is like a boy who only cares about her much more as a sex-thing. that they are intimate in a physical way more than an emotional way.
Health is a theme; it plays around with health - in emotional and physical.
Notice how she puts on her mom's shoes in the beginning, as if she does it only because she has to, without any showing of course, and look at how she treats her mom.
The part where her mom goes through all the trouble to wrap EVERY piece of food in the refridgerator to please her daughter. And you can imagine only how much her mom can really do - she's confined to that wheelchair.
It's almost as if the "twitch" - as i thought first - was a 'Good' Twitch! Like a typical teenager falling for a boy, and she didn't seem too worried when she was at the doctor's. THEN, the story changed when you started to see the image of her suffocated and being strangled when her boyfriend is touching her.
It's at this point that she's so scared, she thinks of her mom and all that her mom must go through.
She comes home and puts her mom up in the chair, and this time, she is noticeably a little more gentle with her mom and minds her a little more. (before, when she entered the house, she gave extremely little care to her mom)
She wraps her legs in the plastic to see what it feels like to REALLY be her mom - to not be able to move or feel or use her legs.
The pool contrasts with feelings that she had (in the beginning) as a little girl. The scene in the beginning is a contrast. It compares how happy and excited she was as a child, loved her mom and liked to share things with her (like children do) and how she didn't understand her mom's condition. But the end is the opposite. The scene is even taken at night. And if you notice, the way the camera records it, it's similar to the same way they recorded the free way she swam in the beginning.
I took the last scene to be a manifestation of her fears that she is going to end up wheelchair bound like her mother. She wanted to know what it would feel like to have only half of her strength to keep her head above water, both in the literal and metaphorical sense. It also ties in with the first scene, when her mom couldn't stand to watch her swim, with all her faculties, when she herself was too impaired to try.
her mother has something wrong with her legs. She's afraid to grow up as her mother, without the use of her legs. She feels the twitch in them everytime her boyfriend and her have sexual contact, so she tests it. When he's kissing her ass she feels like she's choking i think? i dont know, i don't really understand that part. but then at the end she warps her legs in cling wrap to compare the feeling and emotion.
to me the wrap on her legs was the way for her to feel this final step of what was taking tole on her body the removal was her realizing the now the fact that for this time being she will have to just keep moving on.
the mother- rep. her future
The boyfriend- is the mask used to cover up all the self loathing
I understood, too, that she's scared she has what her mother has, but the saran wrap in the pool made me think for minute she was going to drown herself! Whew. The idea of her trying to understand her mother's world a little better is a great ending, but adding a lot more footage could help us experience that gradual understanding process with her.
alot of it's symbolic, maybe the ending is the girl trying to see what if feels like to be in her mothers crippled state - a reflection of the beginning
i'm not the director...(just the festival director) ... but i think that the girl is deeply afraid that she'll get her mother's disease one day and is worried about how her life will change when that happens (will her boyfriend really care about her? will she be able to enjoy the things she loved to do - such as swimming)... the same way we put plastic wrap over food so it won't go bad.. she put the wrap around her legs because she doesn't want it to go bad....

Actually the daughter is the one that wraps all the food, not the mom.

naw dude. watch it again.
its the mom on her knees
and off her rocker wrapping
up all the food (SO IT WON'T ROT)
that her daughter complained
about.

it is the daughter, you can tell because she has a ponytail, and there are scenes where you see the back of the moms head and she has short hair.

I loved how she had to clean herself after every contact with her mother. She's afraid of that being her future, so she tries to wash it off.

I'm a big fan of this film. I was quite surprised to see it here, considering the lengthy festival run it's been on.

wrap, to feel suffocated, to wonder if it's safe ?
Then realizing that she does not have to suffer the same, and lets go ?

when you´re deeply afraid, you can not feel anything.May be the ending means she decided to live without fear so she can feel all emotions.
