Absolute brilliant song and brilliant band. The thing you hear in the background is a filtered (or something) voice saying "We shall overcome''. My question is : Who played that utterly brilliant guitar-solo at 2.32. In the extended version it is also played on an acoustic guitar i think. I think its Robbie McIntosh but i'm just not sure. Maybe Mark ????
Eles eram bons demais para terem terminado. O legado deles é íncrivel, Pictures of Bernadette se tornou uma obsessão para mim esses dias. Uma das melhores que eu já ouvi.
As far as I'm aware it's supposed to be a "golden goose". James Marsh painted it for the cover of the album EMI released as a protest over the way EMI treated Talk Talk, but the reference implied by the image went over the head of EMI executives.
@ematech come back come back. if these guys come back i would pay a lot of money to see them. fuck all the bullshit you hear no a days. im 30 and me and my friends ( metal heads ) think this is one of the best ever. talk talk so much passion so 80ties. one word beautiful
As an 80's dork I kept a record of my top 8 songs from 80-88. This spent a week at #1 in June 1986. Thanks to Rock Over London for turning some into America on to this song. BTW, Spirit of Eden is my favorite TT album (though it doesn't have this song.
Previously, Friese-Greene was the producer of Thomas Dolby's groundbreaking Age of Wireless (with She Blinded Me with Science),, and co-produced with Mutt Lange The Records absolutely Brilliant power pop debut Shades in Bed (with Starry Eyes). If you listen closely, the track Up All Night on Shades portends things to come in Talk Talk.
Tim Friese-Greene just doesn't get enough props in creating Talk Talk's sound post the eponymous debut. He never toured, but in the studio beginning It's My Life he developed a progression of sounds that have never been duplicated. Tim played keyboards, produced the Talk Talk albums.
Talk Talk are timeless, 'It's such a shame' that they are no longer creating music...
The court cases with EMI ended the band, I have always hated EMI - Corporate Shite! Record companies just want mass product these day's - boy bands and the such or squeaky girls with no talent!
Emotions lie in approach, not in instrumentation and musical style. One can record good synthpop song and crappy jazzrock jam, it's all about what you want to share with audience. Hollis definitely knew what and why he'd been doing. Result - unforgettable music existing beyond any particular genre, even if bearing resemblance to some. Fascinating.
Is it just me or does this song deserve more exposure? All the elements come together really nicely and combine to something that's more than the sum of its parts.
I also love the extended version with the funky guitar in the intro. Someone should out that up actually.
This song got absolutely no exposure in Canada. That's the trouble with it being a b-side. I don't know why it wasn't on the Colour of Spring album as it was just as good as the rest of the material from that. That's part of the fun of hard core fans having little gems like this to themselves. The rest of the world just does not get it!

It's the goose that laid the golden egg. Get it?
This was when EMI released their lesser known B sides and remixes.

It's a pity that the beginning of the song is cut off a bit. That unfortunately is how the CD is mastered on the single version on CD2.

Such progressive sophistication to bask in, and executed with such flair - on a B-SIDE!
I salute this bloke. Genius, thy name is Hollis.
