  • James May sounds a bit bland, lacking somewhat. Sir James May sounds more like it.

  • everytime he said airfix I kept thinking he said 'ethics' and I thought "whoa that's a pretty deep topic for a show called Toy Stories hosted by James May"........

  • I want to make models but they are crazy expensive.

  • Just noticed that they have almost exclusively played Green Day songs like "American Idiot" and "Good Riddance" , most other songs were inspirational instrumentals.

  • An effort could have been made to thank the actual makers of this replica for spending all those restless nights thinking about this project, good job!

  • @delodelo1 I was waiting for him to say something about them then I was like "oh.... so... they get no recognition despite the fact they pretty much made it."

  • i've been making models since I was 8 an still love it! (I'm 15) it's sad that so few kids do it now cause i'd love to do it with my friends

  • That's why I love BBC and its folk. They always do something constructive and encouraging :) cheers from Poland

  • 0:28 no pressure then

  • theres no airfixes in my country

  • One thing I notice about the plane...is they didn't paint the bottom of the plane.

  • @hashrulsubzero its not supposed to...

  • @EgleThe12 Really ? O_O

  • @hashrulsubzero Well on at least under nose... But i have seen ones with no colour at the bottom at all... And they made it custom so they don't need it i think..

  • @hashrulsubzero I think they may have painted it another shade of blue, but the bottom is supposed to be blue anyways. The paint job on the plane is so when you look down at it it blends into the ground and is harder to see, and when you look up at it it blends into the sky to be harder to see.

  • wasnt the color scheme suppose to be black and blue??

  • Superb model making. Congratulations to the model maker from Cornwall & all of his employees. It's absolutetly amazing what they did, given the daunting task, and time-frame.

Brilliant job of getting early teens (13 - 14-year-olds, I think) to appreciate model building and learning to think & work collabrativelly.

Thanks very much for doing this, James -- and thanks to everyone involved for being so attentive to detail and working hard to make sure everything was right.

  • what if this show was hosted by Jeremy Clarkson ?

Jeremy : alright kids , today we're gonna build a real size aston martin DBS and blow 'em up..

  • WoWWWWWWWWW GOOOOD JOB. Congratulations James

  • I never got into model making as a kid.. but then again, I think in our generation since we build so little you need a good teacher to help get it going. I remember going to the hobby shop and while i thought the models were all very well and cool, the thought of doing all that work.. heck no.

Obviously as an adult now I've learned to appreciate hard work, and taking pride in accomplishments.

Someday when I have the time, think i'll give it a whirl.

  • Hopefully James has planted the seeds for more than one of those kids to become an engineer;-)

  • Was that James farting!!!

  • I have so much respect to the veterans of WWII, especially those who participated in the battle of Brittan who turned the tides of war against all odds.

We should remember that the freedom we take for granted today is the fruit of the sacrifices of so many young men & women over 60 years ago.

Good job on this episode James May and BBC.

    Respect from Israel.

  • James' parents look so young! Or maybe it's James looking much older than he really is heh!

  • Well, that's me off to the model shop to buy a Airfix Spitfire. Lol

  • Im 27 and Ive got my son into Airfix as well, he loves it!!!

  • If more teachers were like James and had a fire about what they wanted to teach others, then maybe the kids of today would be far better off than they are. I would loved to have had James as a teacher, I still would and im 34 now!

  • It's amazing that, despite 94330 views and 203 votes, there isn't a single dislike :D

  • @Avalonn1989

not really i mean if you've watched all six parts and didn't like them well then you've just wasted a very long hour.

  • I used to make model airplanes too, I'm 17, it's fun :D

  • brilliant idea. of course, mr. may is much more than captain slow ...

  • Thanx to AIRFIX for new SPITFIRE kit in 1 /48 and im build in my life more of 30

and 20 must build in future.

  • Im quite young and i love making airfix, more than getting a computer game!

  • They could have picked cadets that wore the uniform I should now I am one.

  • Brilliant. I wish I had such activities in school :)

  • @SolarPL

    me 2 m8 me 2!

  • If it breaks everyone will hate u

    lolol poor tom

  • This made me want to make an airfix model, a truly great effort which has succeeded, Thank you James May.

  • no dislikes!!! James you are awesome!!

  • Very cool top upload thanks

  • i was at the museum today and saw the airfix model

  • anyone else felt abit emotional at the unveiling?

  • don't know about you guys, but i shed a few tears over this....

  • @nickh1974 I am currenly 14 and I feel like I have an old man inside me because of all the awesome old stuff there is and belive me I shed a few tears myself!

  • I like the way James' dad is overlooking everything. Typical dad!

  • So, is the spitfire still at the museum??

  • haha

girl- "extend that brown stop by ummm like abit further..."

    girl-"did that make sence"

    james-'yeah'

    girl-"yeah*cute smile*"

  • James, you are amazing

  • Whats the music at the start?

  • @tazman3124

In the credits it says Gil Cang

  • Some model building clubs have "Open Day" arrangements with "Build & Take" events meaning that if you build a offered free model on site and completes it, it will then be yours to take home...It´s one way of promoting this great hobby! ;-)

  • Some kids are bored of video games - my youngsters started watching half way thru - transfixed. At the end "whats it called... air..." and "what was that airplane"... "oh right a Spitfire" ... "I'd like some of those kits, do they still make them"

So yes, thank you Mr May - inspirational, fantastic series, second only to TG!

  • "Spiffy!" :-D

  • Year 8 kids and a spitfire.

There is hope for the future!

  • @Zerolionking They are 13 you fucking nonce.

  • @Zanderguard hes not saying he wants to plow them. Like you don't look at other ppl's kids and say they're cute

  • @Zanderguard Fag

  • @Zanderguard

I think that you may be the fucking nonce. It's your sick mind that read something into someone commenting on a CHILD that is perfectly lovely looking.

  • they like green day hehe xD

  • HOLY SHIT HE LOKS LIKE HIS MOTHER

  • Does anyone know the name of the song in the end credits or band name? :)

  • @TheNextLevelDotCom greenday

  • OMFG. Imagine if those same kids set out to make a life sized tank! :D

  • JAMES' MOM

  • This of gives you a idea of the engineering that goes into a the real plane. These were not built with computers like modern planes. It really takes passion and mechanical knowledge to understand. People that understand mechanics are on another level. Cheers and thanks to a guy that can sway a multi million dollar tv channel to use so much money to produce these things.

    Awesome!!!

  • And Airfix tank models are the worst on the world... even polish RPM is better...

  • Amazing, but Airfix models are worse than Revell, Hobby Boss, Heller etc.

  • awesome everything!

  • Comment removed

  • airifx is awesome, i started at 15 and stopped but after seeing this the other week on DAVE i started again and brought 2 models lol...am 19 so av got the money

  • Well done James! This is just brilliant. A good side of TV.

    Thank you!

  • on ya James this is some reel good television.

  • "no pressure Tom,"

"if it breaks, everyone will hate you."

  • Until I was 13 (2 yrs ago) I made airfixes and I'm a girl. I don't get why these kids don't like them :/

  • I used to make airfix models from when I was 5 till I was 9. I mostly made planes.

  • @lennic95 couse its a certain hobby , geuss these kids got other intrests.

  • @lennic95 y did u stop

  • @micro222able I don't know really... :)

  • @lennic95 u should try it out again

  • so many songs from green day

  • I hope he will build a 1:1 tank one day! YaY!

  • a beautiful Comet passenger jet in the background!

They were the trial and error of commercial air travel which destroyed their early reputation, but God they were good-some of them are still in service over 60 years later and the sheer beauty!

Comet, Concorde and Spitfire, three best planes ever

  • When I have kids these are the kind of toys they will grow up playing. (:))

  • thats wonderful James may has done an amazing achievement with these students teaching them how to build models and building the biggest one in the world of a spitfire which is also my favorite type of plane

  • I am 14 and have just started to build models, and my first model was a supermarine spitfire Mk 1a I first saw that plane at an air show and when I heard the rore of the engine it made be feel emotional, my grandad was a royal marine during ww2 and said the best thing was seeing spitfires fly over because it made him feel safe. And I believe that young or old Everyone should enjoy the spitfire.

  • im 13 now i have been building models ever since i was 8 but in my school im considered in the cool group but i believe that if they find out i build models they might not like me and think im a nerd but many of them know and they respect that my grandfather was a pilot and was a plane egineer in ww2 and im very interested in planes but the feeling of finishing you model is great!

  • 6:41 It's Statler & Waldorf.

  • I haven't seen any of the other James May Toy Stories shows, but this one is going to be very hard to top. Well done!!!

  • @ChatsworthATVRentals The Plastecine Flower Show one is the best

  • Fantastic episode, very impressive that they pulled this off and I am extremely jealous of these kids for having the opportunity to be a part of this.

James makes a fantastic TV presenter in his own shows. It's nice to see him be able to fully express things he is interested in as they are often suppressed on Top Gear. Also, that passenger plane in the background is beautifully elegant!

  • Fantastic episode, makes me very envious

  • James is such an old school geek in a good way.

  • Brings back so many great memories from my childhood. I'd build them my grandfather would paint them (it was all to fiddley for me that bit) and then they would be mounted in my cabinet in a fitting background. I still have 3 cabinets full of airfix models and i'm in my 20s.

Most of my grandfathers works now inhabit RNZAF Museam Wigram, Christchurch, New Zealand.

  • Notice that they haven't painted the bottom.

  • @codemannz They did, it matches the paint scheme of many Spitfires. They also added the Royal Air Force roundels to the underside of the wings 4:39.

  • the real test... will it fly?

  • Dear Santa...

  • I want one too!!! :))

  • That came so close to breaking!

  • 4:14 James May's mother, already seen in a Top Gear episode

  • right when the plane came out jeremy clarkson should have plowed throught with a tank!!!!! . that would have been awesome !

  • @buwaneka66 no.not really.half the time, Jezza is a massive pillock.

  • That is just surreal seeing a full size Spitfire fuselage in blue fibreglas being hoisted over a wing! It isn't just a model, it has entered the twilight zone! ;) But it is cool to watch.

  • Absolutely amazing! I always liked to make models, however i it's takes a lot of time so when years go bye i sadly can't make them as much as i want. Great job Captain Slow!!!

  • I have honestly fell in love with a new TV show. This show is absolutley amazing. James May was truely a fantastic host and this idea was very insperational. Wonderful James. I have never teared up from a TV show ever until watching this. I would have loved to have been a part of this build. Keep up the good work James May.

  • I can't help buth wonder: If you threw that model of a cliff, how far would it float?

  • @PublicSting untill it hit the ground

  • epic video...amazing hats off to James May...incridible!

  • im gonna look for this musium next time i go to England.

  • absolutely epic... just absolutely amazing

  • I really enjoyed watching this.. Can't really say why, but this is great :)

  • Hats off Mr. May exemplary entertainment!

Besides i'm green with envy for those kids, they must be bursting with pride.

This is one thing computer games are not capable of providing: the experience of stepping back on the end of the day being able to say "I did that, i made that" pointin at something that physically exists

  • aww (: James is having a sentimental and touching moment

  • This is wonderful. Not only does it fill me with nostalgia for my own model-building years, it makes me realise why my parents were teachers, and how important these kids are.

  • LOL at 9:08 hahaha

  • Wow, that's amazing!!!

  • That turned out brilliant, I was a bit worried when they started painting but it looks stunning.

  • i love the top gear where james mays mother( mrs. may) come to top gear and drives more crazy than captain slow. lol. and she knows things like low profile tires and stuff lol

  • I really enjoyed this episode, the first time i've seen it. inspired me to get some of my kit out of the cupboard

  • what song/music is that at 7:41?

  • @translego1

    Victory Quest by John Powell

  • "My plane... I mean the kid's plane..." ha ha

  • @MultipassLeluDallas smooth...

  • GREAT!!

  • lol, "no pressure, but if it breaks, everyone will hate you"

  • I want to make an airfix model now

  • WTF??! THATS SOO BIG :O, seeing James on Top Gear tomorrow again, YEAH TOP GEAR!!!^^ (lol ;) )

  • LOL green day songs!

  • "No pressure." "If it breaks, everyone will hate you."

    Brilliant kids!

  • Wow! What an airfix :D

  • James likes cars so much because he is a co host in a tv show called top gear.

  • BLOODY AWESOME!!

  • Absolutely brilliant.

  • James and his parents - NICE!

  • just kidding mate.

  • If it breaks everyone here will hate you, lol peer pressure at its worst!

  • what a great show

  • the girls are so cute~

  • Thanks James, if anyone needs me I will be at the local hobby shop reliving my childhood.

  • James May is one guy who does everything...

  • @MuikuliWander hes like a version of me 14 years in the future heheh

  • alright alright p51 mustang next

  • i want an airfix hat..

  • sorry but i'm a stickler for accuracy when it comes to paint jobs on airfix..but thats kids for ya!

  • what happened to the kids paint job???

  • @zasder1110 yeah it ened up in its proper colours.,,i winced when that left leg wobbled when it came out of the hangar.

  • What's the closing song? Remember the original from somewhere...

  • That was brilliant.

  • love the theme music

  • god, i am such a nerd.

i already ordered an airfix spitfire.

  • @petach You know if you mess up a spitfire you go to hell xD, get some practice if you havn't painted before, get a Hurricane or a Messersmitt and practice on it!

  • @petach Joined You, I did the same :)) in 24th scale

  • @Brera011 Id love to see your 1/24 Spit! I have the kit in my stash but ive not made it yet. :)

  • @petach haha. Now that your comment is 5 months old... how did you find the kit? Did you enjoy it? And will you be making more? :)

  • @petach Hey, how's yer airfix goin'? Got it finished?

  • @petach best airfix model ever.

  • @petach No you're not! Airfix is brilliant! Since the television show was aired, Airfix sales increased. You're simply another one of them

  • The girl at 2:19 looks very twinkly eyed at James! She's only 14.

  • haha yeah, yeah lmao

  • LOL, I'd like to think that she was touched with the James May equivalent of praise that she got but I think that you're right: She has a wee bit of a crush.

  • no, shes 13, and in year (or grade) 8

  • i'm going out to buy my kids a spitfire airfix ..... & one for me of course!

  • James May is starting to do some really amazing television, no longer do I see him as just Clarkson's co-presenter.

  • @AICabal Totally, was just thinking the same thing.

  • @AICabal same here!

  • @AICabal he was never Clarkson's co-presenter in the way it sounds. He is part of Top Gear as much as any of them

  • I bought an AIRFIX 1:48 spitfire Mk1 today, cost less thana round of drinks!! I ride bikes and listen to loud music, yet because of watching this I felt compelled to make a model, the mrs thinks I'm nuts.. I'm 12 again! All hail the Mayster he's achieved a lot.

  • the transfers on the wings are wrong, should be just navy and red ? wheres the canopy aswell ? still, quality job they did ;-)

  • @villan81 i think the canopy was meant to be slid open

  • Looking for that song.

Its not Hans Zimmer, nor Steve Jablonsky.

  • Yeah whats the song at 7:30?

  • @chrizg44

Victory Quest (John Powell) from the movie Street Kings

    Thanks to raintz99 at finalgear

  • Wow a BOAC in the backround..

  • I hope the Beonce concert was really good.

  • @RomanatorII looool

omg that part pissed me off >_>

  • Child labour works after all then it seems.

  • Anyone know the song at 7:30?

  • Excellent show, thanks for upload
