"how ironic these words became considering it was actually the end".How's that? January 1969. The White Album came out only three months earlier and they still hadn't even pondered the idea of making Abbey Road yet.
Friend & i were there around early Sept. 1976, when original door was still there. We bought Markers & signed the door, upper left side: name, where we were from & the date. It was amazing to be there, even tho' building was completely closed off then. As we all know, huge photo of original door is on back of Ringo's Rotogravure album from Sept. 1976. I was thrilled when Paul had door removed, to be preserved forever, with all those signatures & remarks.
@kittyx32009 I think it was 76 the first time I went there too. We were very lucky. It was a Saturday. I took three photos of the door. Ran out of film. Went back the next day Sunday, the bulders were in and the door was gone!
thank for sharing this video, I was there the last november and there was some people inside the building and the light was turn on in first and underground floor. I saw the building in very bad conditions
Thats a good question: I was there Jan 30th 2009, and the building was being re furbished. I also held the Plaque thats going up on the wall outside the building to commemorate that concert. I havent been back since, so not sure whats happening now.
Thanks for sharing this tour with us, 'ol '55. It appears that the roof has been remodeled quite extensively over the past 40 years. The wooden planks must have rotted long ago and appear to have been removed. Looks like some new construction has taken place in the neighborhood. I see some new office towers that I don't recall having been there in Let It Be.
The wooden planks were only put on the roof just for filming. Once the filming was done planks were romoved. I havea clip on Youtube, called The Beatles At TFS ( Twickenham Film Studios ) as some of Let It Be was filmed at Twickenham, you may find theclip interesting.
That's interesting. I wonder why they went to all the bother of laying out the planks for a 40-minute concert? The brick room at the top of the stairwell also looks quite different from the film--heavily remodled. It would be fun to see some of the photos--or even film footage--of the Beatles tribute band that played up there for the 30th anniversary. That should become a tradition on every additional dedcade added past the historic concert.
They put the planks down to protect the roof especially FOR the concert. There was a lot of people up there and equipment too. The roof needed to be protected. There is a very short youtube clip of The Bootleg Beatles performing on the roof for the 30th Anniversary. I have seen the clip.
Well spotted regarding the brick room. The door leading out on to the roof is now in a completely different position from the Beatles time there. If you view the Bootlegs youtube concert on the roof, you will see that planks were laid down for that concert too.
Very Cool. I was at an auction at Abbey Road in studio One in 2006 and was also able to get someone to let me in to studio 2 ...what a vibe! I did see the outside of Saville 3, but wow.... to get in....Karma! Thanks for the post!
Thanks for your comment. I was in Studio 2 back in 83 ( I had to pay ) Unfort, I had no video cameras back then. All the Beatles instruments were set up like they were about to come out and play a show. What a BUZZ!!
i was there in 1976- and the doorman next door told me that the old recording equipment was still in the basement(must be gone by now)- he also said that the building had been slightly demolisehed in the rear- do you have any info on that? thanks
The building is MUCH larger than you see from the front. It remined me of Dr Who's Tardis ( Dr Who is a UK TV Series )In fact it has been addes TO, rather than demolished. Its recently been sold. It has stood empty for about 2 yrs. They cant change it too much, it is Grade 2 listed. Cant be altered by law.
I believe that they borrowed much of the equipment from EMI's studios for the Let It Be project. Mark Knopfler apparently bought one of EMI's old four-track, all tube mixing desks. He keeps it at his own studio, British Grove, and occasionally hooks it up for some projects.
Thats because at the time of filming, it WAS a confrence room. He prob smoked a few ''herbal'' ciggies in there but not much else. The Beatles were hopeless at playing ''biusiness men''
Sorry I dont know what this is in reply to. I firmly believe Yoko saved his life. He was very miserable and a HERION junkie. She comes into his life and now he has a reason to live again.
Yes the company itself is still trading. After all, the Beatles are still selling CDs and stuff. But number 3 Savile Row finished round about 1975. Neil Aspinal who recently died was the Managing Director, and a forty something year employee.
When i was there recently the building was closed and for sale, i'm trying to figure out the broker for this building, maybe we could arrange a re-visit :D
I remember the first time I saw this video (all those years ago) and I thought it was awesome then and I still think it's awesome. Now the rest of the world will know what I've known all along, what a talented man you are.
The platform behind the rail , the wood planks, was under the lads when they played right? How come it looks so small under you? Have they changed the layout over the years? The rail was at the edge of the roof back then, I think. Right?
Hi. The wooden planks covered the roofing area where the boys played. It was only put down for them to play on. When they finished it was removed ( check out the photo in my clip that appears just before I appear ) The rail isnt at the front of the roof, its towards the rear. In fact in the film Let It Be, you see Paul duck under the rail as The Beatles go on the roof. I dont know what was at the front of the roof on the day they played, but when I was there it was a sheer drop. Scary!!
Very cool video. Loads of fun. I would LOVE to tour 3 Saville Row, and you guys would be fun to hang with there for a couple of hours. What sort of business is housed there now?
What I mean is, what was the building used for at the time you toured it? What sort of offices are we seeing in your video at the 3:48 mark, or what used to be Lennon's office? Sorry for all the questions. Just a natural curiousity I didn't mean to become such a big deal. Thanks.
Ok np. At 3.48 its just a passage-way, no offices. The building was used as a Lawyers Office. Johns office was used for client meetings ( It was a great advert for the company to say ''have your meeting in John Lennon's Office'') Unfort, this had a downside because people would steal from the office during the meetings. They had to employ a security guard, or keep the door locked in the end. Oh and Johns office is the only one to survive from those Beatles days. The building is Grade 2 Listed.
Fantastic. The front door is now gone - replaced by some weird, angled monstrosity. May I ask - HOW did you get to do this? I've approached the current owners/tenants and they've said they don't do tours. I'd love to know how you made it happen. I was just recording at Abbey Road which was an amazing thrill, but I'm still jealous of you guys. Congrats!
Thanks ( Jimboggia and conrock1018 ) for your comments. It would take a long time to say how we got an invite to visit Apple, so I'll just tell you the short version. LUCK. Good old fashioned luck.
That is so awesome, i would love to go there...i've watched the rooftop concert so many times it would just be surreal to know that that is where they played the famous show. Great video, 5 stars.
