My favorite band of all. When I was a kid in the 80s and first heard this and their other early songs I thought it was the greatest sound I had ever heard. I still do. Also, I was searching something to express my identity as a person, specifically through music. I was a fan of a lot of different types of music, but none really defined me as a person. When I heard REM I thought "This is who I am".
About UP-some good songs; Suspicion as my favourite, then, Professor, Lotus, At my most, Diminished, Parakeet. Just songs like You're In The Air make it quite boring. Too slow album, as for me.
I think UP was a great REM album. It was new and different, but damn those songs were great. Lotus still strikes a chord within me and Parakeet, Diminished, Apologist and DaySleeper are just beautiful
REM were in great shape in 1998, although Bill Berry had parted the band a year earlier. I think their 1998 album Up contains a number of great, beautiful and atmospheric songs, like Lotus and Parakeet.

It's like they're having a competition to see who can sound the most like they're saying words without actually saying any words. It's fantastic.

Joey Waronker [studio/live drummer] contributed on two of the best albums of 1998; R.E.M's "Up" and Smashing Pumpkins "Adore".
