Will there ever be a day when Germany produces television programs with such quality, that we love to watch dubbed German sitcoms, just as they watch everything that comes out of Hollywood and New York? Doubtful.

I would watch Family Guy if it was a German writer (dubbed to English), but I am not convinced that a German person can even create something that funny.

Guys, there are reasons for and against dubbing, all of which can be found in Wikipedia:

Overall, it is a tradition in that particular country whether a film is dubbed or not. You can buy DVDs with multiple audio tracks and optional subtitle so that you can watch the film the style you like. And German film theatres feature presentation in original language with subtitles. But most people prefer dubbed versions.

What would you say, if everything in US TV would be in spanish ? 2. not EVERYONE here (though many) germans speak english. Would you find it fair, if all who didn´t learn engl. would have to concetrate on the subs the whole time, which makes it harder to WATCH the show.

The threshold of those variations is mostly only for those people audible, who are native speakers. Especially in funny shows like ALF, much of the humor would be lost, when one watches it in a language he or she doesn´t naturally speak. Don´t know if you got that point there, but I think you understand, what I´m tryin´ to say.

The german voice was chosen to make him sound more younger and cuter. When I heard the english voice the first time (I'm German) my first thought was that he sounds much more ribald. But now I also like it very much - for me its another kind of interpretation.

I simply think the german audience was not ready for this older and more rigorous version of Alf in 1982 (The Germans were a bunch of babbitts in these days :P)
