  • I'm trying to learn vopm right now, and I wish I really knew what I was doing. If you could give me some of your presets and possibly some programming advice advice, I would appreciate it.

  • Epic.

  • Also if the only difference between the 2 chips are 2 channels ... wow, what a difference they must make. Listen to a high quality version of the music from the arcade games Peter Pack Rat, Space Harrier and 720. No one could ever dream of having sounds HALF that good on a Genesis/Megadrive. I'd even go as far as saying that those 2151 arcade games sound better than anything I've heard from a DX7 or DX100.

  • Thanks for the reply. I'm new to FM synthesis so let me ask some stupid questions:

    1) In the VOPM manual it says that the 2151 has 4 operators. If you say it has 8 channels - does that mean I can only mess around with 4 channels in the modulation matrix - and the other channels are just simple sine waves or something?

    2) Where do you get "2612 patches"? I cannot even find VOPM patches on google.

  • Since the subject has already come up - what exactly is the different between the YM2151 and the YM2162 found in the Megadrive/Genesis?

I'm guessing that the YM2162 is a cheaper chip with less power - because nothing on the Genesis sounds half as good as the arcade versions of Space Harrier, 720 or Roadblasters.

  • Ever tried using TFM tracker? That one I think is a bit more user-friendly, and it comes with a TON of extra instruments. It's what I use when I do stuff, anyway, and can produce files that with some extra programs/hardware can actually be played back on an actual Genesis or an emulator.

  • I hope you make more FM music in the future, it's great to listen to!

  • really? I have 128 presets on my VOPM lol and can I have the sonic FXB Banks if thats ok with you? Please!

  • Heck yes!" Man this rules :D Are these presets or have you tweaked the sounds yourself? ;D I simply loove it

  • Oh man, the VOPM is not very user friendly, and doesn't even come with any presets! I tweaked most of the sounds myself. But I saved them, so if you want any that I've made ever, just let me know.

  • Me too :)

  • me 3

  • love it, so awesome :D Sounds so Sega'y, reminds me being at a carnival or something...

  • Thanks! I think that's what I like so much about old-style video game music; the way it makes you think of places and environments!

  • Dude I agree, keep making more m8!

  • Well, the YM2151 was used in a number of arcade games in the mid-80s and early 90s (including great ones from Sega like Golden Axe, Outrun, and Space Harrier), and I believe it's related to the YM2162 to an extent that was used in the Genesis/MegaDrive console.
