It's relevant to know that although they prefered the ideology of communism in every aspect of the Russian life above a religious lifestyle, this didn't necessarily contradict each other.

From 1941 Stalin had a more tolerant position against religious institutes. He had good relations with the orthodox church and even tolerated islam and buddhism. He did create a council that made sure communistic ideals were preached.
