Kasparov has created a myth over the years, he was a dangerous subversive who the Soviets hated and wanted to stop from challenging for the title. That is bullshit. Kasparov did what he was told and got all the support and help he needed. He was not someone the Soviets hated, Korchnoi is an example of that. His family harassed constantly and he himself defected. Did Kasparov defect? Was his family affected? No! He took full advantage of the resources of the Soviet chess school!
· Many Champions won this way, i.e. Lasker -Schelchter for instance. In my humble opinion, Fischer, Karpov and Kasparov, are the greatest players of modern times, and Capablanca, Lasker,Alekhine, Botvinnik, and Morphy, the greatest of past players that have ever lived. Among the also rans, I would include Pillsbury, Steinitz Keres,Tarrasch, Spassky, and Tal as the best of the rest.
· Karpov, peaked around 1978-84. At this time he was a much strong player, often reching the level of play performed by fischer, and would have been a more even match in 78. He would not have had enough in 1975 to beat Fischer, but he did have the whole of the Soviet might behind him for analysis purposes to help him. Fischer's, demands were fair, and all but one was accepted by F.i.d.e. which was the right of the Champion to retain his title if the match was drawn
· Karpov, struggled to beat Korchnoi in the semi's. I think this is a good indicator that he was not yet fully developed, as Fischer was. (Fischer, feared no one on the chess board, His ego would not allow it). He had fought the best all his life and his demands were all met by F.I.D.E. but one, the right to retain his title if the match ended in a draw.
They played without computers, with work of their own. And they were both Kings, unparrallel to the nowadays computer chessplayers. Maybe Carlsen has something exceptional.
This is the good stuff! Especially the Karpov-Korchnoi material is exciting to see as I haven't seen before a video footage of those extremely tense matches. Somehow Anatoli was prone to those absolutely titanic struggles. First with Korchnoi and then with Kasparov. I would give an arm to be able to change history so he would have had the chance to do the same against the great Bobby.
Heh. By achievements Karpov is the second greatest player of all time, a ice-cold machine. Im sure even the "God of the gods" Fischer would have had his hands full with him.
@Haltung Bobby Ficsher was the greatest chess player in history no doubt.. He he lived in Iceland as an immigrant when the usa government refused to renew his passport in Japan... Only 7 people attended his funeral!! You see now the end of great man?! God bless America!!!???
@Haltung I highly doubt Karpov could have contained Fischer. If you look at what Fischer did in lead up his '72 crown, you'd see maybe why he didn't come back. he was dominating like no one has done, before or after. Karpov is as solid as they come, but not nearly the imagination of Fischer. Karpov killed off a lot of the hype Fischer has built with his willingness to draw over and over.
@Ericbwoo I think it'd been close, with maybe Fischer winning the match by a point or two. Fischer, in '75, was then in his early 30's, he'd done it all, but he had alot to potentially lose in this match., He was facing a younger, hungry opponent who had his best chess still ahead of him, wherelse Fischer could barely improve on his previous colossial achievements. I'd still have took Fischer to edge it, but it'd have been tough, and I think Fischer knew it

I like Karpov. But his hair looks greasy. Plus all the political factors make it easier to support Kasparov.
