Hey there betterthanmcgyver made 3 off ur bows out of 7attempts.still havin problems with the tips but getting there.Never had any experience making or firing bows, pvc or heat guns ,having a ball.Good on you for makin the vid.Look Forward to your next oneIn Aus shedule 40 is PN12 for anyone here having trouble
I really like the video, well presented and very clear. The finished product looks fabulous and draws so evenly when you shoot, I'm definitely going to make one (or more). You state the draw weight, but have you ever measured arrow speed?
In all fairness to Nick though, I suspect his title comes as a reaction to other people telling him that it's "impossible" to make a good bow out of pvc and not that he's implying the technique is impossible or even unduly difficult.
@betterthanmcgyver...part 2...lay the 'filled PVC' on the wood form and uncap the ends so that the sand can run out...now, cool with water slowly (damp rags are better). Your bow will have a PERFECT form then. See this vid for great process shown. It is on snowshoes, but works the same for a bow... watch?v=3RSIzMTfX7A
@betterthanmcgyver, really like your vids, great work. While I work in wood, not PVC, I have done a few things with PVC...and saying that, might I suggest one thing for your bows? Instead of fighting heat, working like nuts to get it to 'kinda bend' like you want it, try using a coleman stove and heating a 5-qt pot of general playground sand up to about 300-deg. Now, use a cup and some welder gloves, pour it into a section of pipe. Now, with a full profile-form made from simple wood...
furthermore, it is quite far from being a longbow at 5 feet unless you are a dwarf, seeing as a longbow is the height of the archer or close to it when strung
this is not your invention, and i dont see why you think you have any right to claim it. furthermore, your pipe vice is quite similar to the way the japanese make their yumis with bamboo wedges. it is even more similar to the bow forms used by every single maker of fiberglass laminated bows. and dont bash someone elses work, its poor sportsmanship. especially seeing as he "came up with it" a good decade before you
Nice job! Love how you did the tips.Just wanted to know did you heat the PVC before you put it in to your limb shaper or did you heat the PVC pipe already in your limb shaper?
Hey, that's cool, I like the way you make your bow tips. I prefer to use wood, as it lightens the ends and bumps up the arrow speed a tad, but I must say it is impressive. I'm not sure why you are so keen on bashing my book, or talking about it as your own technology. Really, the credit goes to Eugen Baumann back in 1872, who first developed PVC. I've played with straight pvc bows for over 15 years, and have seen bent ones for more than 6. It's not your technology, it's everybody's.
@BackyardBowyer - your book on Amazon is $18.95, so don't jump up with 'it's not your technology, it's everybody's'. If you think like that, then make a public PDF and surrender it to the Public Domain. Otherwise, you really shouldn't bash someone showing how the bows are made, when all you do is show finished products on your vids...seems you are a bit too capitalistic to be preaching to ANYONE on public domain work.
@MountainDweller67 I meant you no offense. I wasn't trying to put him down for his video. I like his video and I respected him greatly, I meant him no quarrel. I may have written a book on it, but I never claimed to invent the PVC bow, just like every respectable author of books on the bowyer's craft never claim they invented the bow. I've been planning on putting up videos when I have time and encourage anyone to do the same. Sadly, I haven't had the time with work and taking care of my family.
@BackyardBowyer - by the way, you look about 17 in your videos...so unless you are misleadingly older, or were building bows at 2, I call B.S. on that 'building bows' for 15-years claim. I've built lemon-wood and maple longbows since 1977, and loomed my own strings since 1981...let's not talk about bowyer expertise too much. If you claim to be a 'bowyer', at least use proper terminology, such as long bow, not 'straight' bow.
@MountainDweller67 I didn't mean any offense with my comment, I just felt that betterthanmcgyver made an unreasonable and offensive comment about my work. I only said that in response to his claim that I stole his idea, which is not true. I have never claimed to be making bows for fifteen years. I've played with straight PVC bows since I was six. By straight I mean a straight piece of PVC pipe with a string on it. I wouldn't call that a longbow.
it is not a wood bow or hunting bow but man it is a great bowi like it a lot
