This is just a mashup of Donna singing her version over the Boss's version of the song. Notice how the words don't match up in places? He wrote and recorded this song, but it was written for her, which is why he didn't release an official version of his (although there is a very good bootleg version). You can hear Bruce's version here:
So...why wasn't this released?Did the record company think the "Queen of Disco" would tarnish the Boss' rep as a credible rock man? If anything, it makes him seem that much cooler. She's never been given her due because of the disco stigma. He alone could've done away with that and looked like a hero doing it.
imagine if this version had been released as a single back in the 80's Donna's star would have gone supernova at the very time her career was going down due to the moniker as Queen of Disco. Lets say this much the is a Diva and can sing more styles of music then ever given credit for Her New album deftly exploits her ability to sing multiple styles check out Crayons now 2009
Donna is a Legend!!!!!!!! I get so sick of these idiots saying Donna hates gay people, no one has ever been able to produce any audio or video tapes of Donna dissing gay people!!! I saw her in concert in Florida recently and more than half the people there were gay!!! Enough Already!!
I side with you 100%. In fact, she sued the magazine that publised that rumour and won. She's always had gay friends and supported gay causes as well.
I always believed Donna secretly had the hots for Bruce Springsteen. (Curiously her husband even has the same first name and initals!) But hey, I ain't mad her! Who wouldn't? If they had married she would be Donna Summer-Springsteen and they would've had two daughters, Autumn and Winter. (Wow...way too much wine tonight).
That was cute! .. I feel Donna wanted this dute with Springsteen as a way to be accepted in the rock community. If Bruce's label would have allowed this song to be recorded and released, Things with Donna would have been very different today... Cheers!
LOL,,,, you dont really believe such a Gay myth do you,,,lol that was proven false a million times... wow,,didnt think there people around who still remember and believe that...lol
moron to fall for that bullshit. Donna Summer loves the gays ! it was a group of jealous assholes that started this dumb rumor to bring her down. Did it work ?? NOPE ! 2011 AND DONNA STILL ROCKS !
Yes, She was one of the few female vocalist that can really Rock out!.. Donna being more of a Rocker at heart, finally moved away from Dance/pop and starting exploring other types of music Starting with "The Wanderer" LP.
The original song he wrote just for Donna was "Cover Me", but his manager convinced Bruce to keep that song, and he then wrote "Protection." It was originally recorded as a duet but they ended up dubbing Donna's voice over Bruce's. Bruce plays on Donna's version and you hear him at the very end of the song.

Jesus Christ, if Donna gets in ahead of The Cure or Eric B & Rakim it will be a major fail.

David Geffen spread the rumor about Donna for sure, hater.

regardless of whether she said it or not, it hurt her career. it was just unfortunate all around.
it's a great song, and she's a great singer who should be in the Hall of Fame.

excellent song by the most underrated singer in the business.
to bad she made those dumb comments about AID'S. She'd be a legend today.
They should release this!

@bergenagain - She is a legned today! Unless, of course, you heard her speak those supposed words yourself.

Bruce wrote this for her. Springsteen felt she had the best voice in pop or rock.
