@GioZakc I'd say Von Manstein myself, it was his plan that brought down france in 1940. Read up on his Crimean campaign from 1941-42 as well as the Third Battle of Kharkov in 1943, a true genius of war.

Yeah its really not the best war movie ever made. Its a good film, but it is full of 1980's war movie cliche's, overacting and other oddities. The stereotypical evil nazi officer, the main characters who happen to be free of any ideology while other lesser characters shoot POWs etc. Also the laughable battle scene where T-34s are being nuked when a molotov cocktail just happens to brush up against them.
It really isn't that good of a film. Does have a pretty powerful ending.

Hilter stripped the 6 Army of most of their Panzers and sent them south to help in the Caucusus then when the push to Stalingrad slowed he wasted more time sending them back. HUGE mistake.

The problem with European war films is that the battle sequences are usually obviously fake. One major reason is that the camera is never hand held to give the feeling of chaos. Every Eureopean war movie I've seen uses tracked shots through the whole movie.

They should have taken Moscow in 1941 instead of wasting time in the south. Then again in 1942 they fucked up by trying to take Stalingrad. They wasted their superior weapons and skills by fighting a war of attrition in close combat in ruins. The German army was superior to the Soviet army, but only on open field where there was space to maneuvre. They made poor choices in both 1941 and 1942.

Interesting - the T-34's in this scene seem to resemble T-34/85's with the cast turret and the famous ZiS 53 - didn't Stalingrad take place atleast 1-2 years before they introduced the T-34/85 tank though?

I would have laughed abit if they had JS-2 tanks instead of KV-1 tanks in this but again haha - thats a different story and I'm not sure if they had KV-1's shown in the film (though did KV-1 tanks see service in Stalingrad? I know they served in Mannerheim Line assault, defence in Barbarossa and Moscova haha).

If not for billions in US aid, the Soviets would not have held out and been able to establish manufacturing behind the Urals pumping out t-34s. Most of the equipment in those plants came from America. I tend to think lingering Soviet era propaganda is the reason Russians downplay the US contribution.

Also, Hilter shifted several Panzer divisions (that could have made a difference) from the Battle of Kursk to the west in anticipation of a new front. Also, US/allies defeated the Germans in Northern Africa, Sicily, Italy, France & W. Germ - plus, provided billions in CRITICAL land lease aid/weapons. Without all that - USSR loses!

And well, as someone who prides himself om having a fairly objective knowledge of military history, as an American, it was insulting to hear comments such as yours. Another one had to do with the US not entering the war until the end -- yet, the US entered just months after the USSR. No country suffered more than the USSR - fact. BUT REMEMBER, the US was not invaded, yet has 100M buried throughout Europe.

@eggz09 My point is this -- and military historians agree -- if not for MASSIVE US supplies -- tanks, planes, jeeps, trucks, food, medicine, ammunition, manfacturing equipment to set up plants, the Soviets would not have been able to hold off the Germans in the early years. Thus, there would have never been a counter-offensive reclaiming Soviet territory and the march to Berlin. It's simply a matter of logistics. You cannot fight a war without equioment/supplie & the USSR was unprepared for war.

I never heard of any war that was romantic. I had one. That was enough. The best part of the movie Stalingrad was when the infantry officer was in Italy. His squad carries him. lough recliner, intot he barrack's sqaure. The command is give, "formation". I almost died laughing as the drunken Lt. with a broken leg was carried into the barracks square by his squad. The others showed up late for the formation. I've been there and done the same .......

They should have taken Moscow in 1941 instead of wasting time in the south. Then again in 1942 they fucked up by trying to take Stalingrad. They wasted their superior weapons and skills by fighting a war of attrition in close combat in ruins. The German army was superior to the Soviet army, but only on open field where there was space to maneuvre. They made poor choices in both 1941 and 1942.

I would have laughed abit if they had JS-2 tanks instead of KV-1 tanks in this but again haha - thats a different story and I'm not sure if they had KV-1's shown in the film (though did KV-1 tanks see service in Stalingrad? I know they served in Mannerheim Line assault, defence in Barbarossa and Moscova haha).

If not for billions in US aid, the Soviets would not have held out and been able to establish manufacturing behind the Urals pumping out t-34s. Most of the equipment in those plants came from America. I tend to think lingering Soviet era propaganda is the reason Russians downplay the US contribution.

Also, Hilter shifted several Panzer divisions (that could have made a difference) from the Battle of Kursk to the west in anticipation of a new front. Also, US/allies defeated the Germans in Northern Africa, Sicily, Italy, France & W. Germ - plus, provided billions in CRITICAL land lease aid/weapons. Without all that - USSR loses!

And well, as someone who prides himself om having a fairly objective knowledge of military history, as an American, it was insulting to hear comments such as yours. Another one had to do with the US not entering the war until the end -- yet, the US entered just months after the USSR. No country suffered more than the USSR - fact. BUT REMEMBER, the US was not invaded, yet has 100M buried throughout Europe.

@eggz09 My point is this -- and military historians agree -- if not for MASSIVE US supplies -- tanks, planes, jeeps, trucks, food, medicine, ammunition, manfacturing equipment to set up plants, the Soviets would not have been able to hold off the Germans in the early years. Thus, there would have never been a counter-offensive reclaiming Soviet territory and the march to Berlin. It's simply a matter of logistics. You cannot fight a war without equioment/supplie & the USSR was unprepared for war.

His squad carries him. lough recliner, intot he barrack's sqaure. The command is give, "formation". I almost died laughing as the drunken Lt. with a broken leg was carried into the barracks square by his squad. The others showed up late for the formation. I've been there and done the same .......
