@11kevoo If you're using a body with an APS-C sensor, then every lens is effectively multiplied by 1.6x. That means the 17-40mm suddenly isn't very wide anymore, but the 10-22mm still is. So for ultra wide on a 'cropped' body, always go for the 10-22mm.
@jcc2150 ALL lenses are multipled by 1.6x on this and other Canon APS-C models, whether the lens is EF or EF-S. All of them! So 17mm is still a fraction wider than 18mm.
@THEHAMM3T Did you read the review that goes with it at cameralabs . com? There I said "highly resistant to dust and moisture." These videos here are just short overviews - they are NOT my full reviews.
wait a minute....i thought the 400d has a 1.6x crop factor so if you put a 17-40mm on shouldn't it look like a 27-64mm? yet in this video the 17-40mm lens at 17mm looks wider than the 18-55mm lens at 18mm....I thought the L lens zoomed out all the way should look like a 27mm on the 18-55mm...
@cameralabs so the 18-55mm lens and the 17-40mm lens are BOTH cropped by 1.6 on the 400d? hopefully i'll get the hang of the whole crop factor concept soon. -.-"
who gives the shit if its only f4. Use the flash or become a strobist tools. 17-40 is used for landscapes and shit so it's not like you gonna be using 2.8 or lower cause of DOF. Get it?
AMEN !!!! Thats what i wanted to say ... who gives a damn about f/4 ... its an excellent landscape and architecture lens ... if you not able to hold it ... get a good flash or take your tripod ... thats it ... :-)
How does this stack up to a much cheaper wide angle prime lens like a Sigma 24mm 1.8? I can't choose because the sigma would be better quality and I use a lot of low light.
@jackie20ization completely depends on what you're doing. If you have the money, buy a few prime lenses. otherwise figure out what you need it for and then find the relating lens.
which lens should i buy for landscape 17-40 or 17-85? is there a difference at 17mm's or its the same wide angle? and wouldn't be better to get the 17-85 even tho its not L-series because its cheap and adds another 45mm's?
i want this lens so bad, but i hate that it's only f4.... any other good options? i dont want to get an ef-s lens, because i eventually want to upgrade from my 550D to a 5D Mk II....
Is it true that the apperture will become 5.6 when on a cropped frame? because i've read on a site that the apperture of the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 turns into f4 on cropped frame
@ANTRASPS3 The focal length listed on EF-S lenses is as if you were to mount that lens on a 35mm body (Impossible though) i.e 17mm on a EF-S is NOT the same as 27.2mm on a EF lens (17 * 1.6), it is still 17mm on a EF mounted to a cropped body. If canon did produce a 17-40mm EF-S lens then you'd see the same thing as if you mounted the EF 17-40mm on your crop frame body. The crop factor is only relevant when both full size and cropped sensor bodies are involved.
hi gordon, please help... i am after a wide angle lens for y canon 50d i was gonna go for the 17-40 l canon but i read your review and it would be a waste on a cropped sensor, so please can you now advise on any alternatives?
@tedstar for nikon, the tokina lens kills all the 3rd party brands, and even nikon. they have very low distortion, and it has VERY sharp images, and i recommend it. but for canon, the 10-22mm, if it existed for nikon, it would be better than the tokina.
ok if you don't wanna read all of that above, than read this:
the canon 10-22mm lens is better than the tokina lens, but if you do low light stuff, the extra 2/3rd stop or 1 1/3stop extra is worth it
can i use the video mode without the EF 17-40mm ? i only have the body and gonna get a EF 50mm f/1.8 , so can i still use the video mode with this lens ?
i'm looking for a wideangle lens for some months now. i have a 450d. do you think the 17-40 would be a good choice for me. i'd buy a fullframe maybe someday. it doenst really have to be ultrawide but still wide.
It's a great lens, but I'd only recommend it if you were definitely going full-frame, otherwise there's better choices for cropped bodies. Feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs forums...
You said there is better choices for cropped bodies. I am currently using a 400D with a 17-85mm lens and it is great walk around. However, better IQ would be preferred. Could you recommend a lens that triumphs the IQ of the 17-85mm but yet still be able to cover wide angles (IE. <18mm focal length). The 17-55mm is being considered and your video on that lens was great.
The Ef-S 10-22mm and Ef-S 17-55mm f2.8 are the best Canon wide angles for cropped bodies... feel free to discuss your options further in the Canon section of the cameralabs forum...
This video is rubbish. Everyone knows the difference between a 17 and a 24 mm lens. A comparisn would be quality of both lenses at 24mm 35mm etc. The 17-40 is by far sharper in the corners than the 16-35 Version 1. Thats why the version II came out. But nothing of that is covered in the video. The 17-40 is a clear buy.
I have def. thought about the future of DSLR's and in a few years perhaps all will be full frame type sensors like the 5d, that has me looking at EF lens more closely then EF-S.
im thinking of buying the 17-40mm to use it on my canon 40d. ive already got the 70-300mm IS lense and now fear that the missing IS will ruin my shots with the 17-40mm. Though that lense does not provide the stabilizer is it really worth buying it without being frustrated afterwards due to some blurry shots ?
Depends how slow a shutter speed you think you'll be using. You could of course alternatively go for the EF-S 17-85mm or EF-S 17-55mm models, both with IS... feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs forums if you like...
Great review!! I have the eos 450D and am looking to get either the ef 17-40 and 16-35 for landscape and night photography, do you think the f/2.8 of the 16-35mm is a must landscape and night photography? or does the f/4 of the 17-40mm is enough for the landscape and night photography?
Thanks for this review! I researched for weeks before i came upon this video, all the time yearning for a comparison between the 17-40mm on a cropped body with the 18-55mm kit. THANK YOU!
Yep, you caught me out! The camera in the video is actually an XTi becuase it was bought in the USA. But it is exactly the same as a 400D - it's only the label that's different.
Craft, if you use one of the kit lens for a few month and then swicht to one of those deluxe lens you will regret big times to got the kit as sold, I recoment to every one buy just the body and upgrade the lens even just a little bit. Actually the lens of the STD kit doesn't reflect the quality of the camera itself.

Hi, I'd recommend checking out our Lens Guide at our sister site dslrtips . com as it explains everything you need to know about choosing a new lens! Then if you've any more Qs, head on over to the Cameralabs forums!
The 17-40mm captures a slightly wider field of view than the 18-55mm when both are zoomed-out on a cropped-frame body: an equivalent of 27mm compared to 29mm. As illustrated in the video and in the full review at the Cameralabs website, that extra 1mm does capture very slightly more. Not much more, but a little bit!
If you're interested in how this lens performs on a full-frame Canon DSLR, check out our second video showing the EF 17-40mm on a Canon EOS 5D! You can find it under the Cameralabs Channel page.
