The 'great and mighty' Roman empire only lasted five hundred years at most, from around 150 BC to 350 AD, prior to that Rome only controls Italy and after that Germanic tribes started carving it up. The Byzantine empire lasted until 1453 yes, but for much of the time it was composed of Asia Minor, Greece and little else.

As the Mongols marched west, they became almost unstoppable, however the Mongol king died, and their journey of domination was halted. Most historians also agree, if the king had not died, the Mongols most likely would have conquered most of the Europe as well.
