When hack animators started making animated film series in the 20's, Windsor McCay called everything they were doing junk, and chided them for wasting a medium that could create beautiful art. Compared to this film, everything else WAS pretty crude at the time. Animators today recognize this as the first film to feature an animated character with a real personality.

In the original vaudeville version, McCay apparrently threw an apple to Gertie, which was changed to a pumpkin for this film. I don't understand why; it actually looks more like an apple.

Wow, this is actually pretty impressive for 1914. The only flaw is that it was just animated with several sheets of paper, and only one drawing per sheet, which meant that the background was redrawn over and over and over, thus it appeared to be quite jittery. But that's okay; later cartoons weren't like that, thanks to the invention of cel animation.
