  • people back in the day must have had a lot of trouble reading

  • I'm still partial to Ko Ko The Clown, Gertie was awesome. But Ko Ko, due to rotoscope was really able to know he was a drawing.

  • They had tv in 1914??

  • the sea serpent is the first animated villian also.

  • Man, Gertie is kind of a jerk

  • Behold: The first cartoon character to break the fourth wall!

  • it ate a rock. and a tree. RUN IT'S GONNA EAT EVERYTHING

  • masterpeace

  • But WAIT! How was Jumbo in the end??? Did he survive?????

  • 1 little kid saw this disliked this for being "Old", you know kids.

  • 4:25 WTF!?

  • Winsor McCay: The father of the animated cartoon!

  • For something experimental, a literal party trick, it's pretty impressive. How hard to square it with contemporary events.

  • I like how the leaves rustle on that tree.

  • In memory of Jumbo 1900-1914

  • Jumbo got a youtube account and disliked this!

  • I think I saw a clip of this on Star Trek: Voyager. It was years ago though so I can't be sure.

  • My dad saw this when he was my age! :D

  • @KeepingPokemonEpic so your dad is 97 + your age years old?

  • @IVIegadude No xD It was a re-run back in the late 60's or early 70's.

  • how old are you?

  • every god damn frame is drawn out. holy shit.

  • I saw clips of this cartoon on the documentary, The Hand Behind The Mouse: The Ub Iwerks Story on Disc 2 of Walt Disney Treasures Wave 7: The Adventures of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

  • 4:22 ....what??? XDDD

man, this is awesome, some of the first cartoons! :D

  • I love gertie! This cartoon is the best.

  • "never mind that Sea Serpent..raise your left foot..."lol

  • @TheNintendofan7 That's okay, I respect your opinion, and perhaps you might wanna learn to respect mine. :)

  • Wow, this is... just... amazing.

Too bad I had to grow up with crappy cartoons like the Fairly OddParents, the Marvellous Adventures of Flapjack, Phineas and Ferb, Fanboy and Chum Chum, Fishhooks, Family Guy and most of the more recent episodes of Spongebob Squarepants.

    Now, this is the SHIT!

  • @AmyRoseCute I totally support that!

  • @AmyRoseCute STRAIGHT UP! same with video games.

  • This is the Silent Cartoon in 1910's

  • Oh, don't cry. Here, catch this pumpkin.

  • Whoah. Dude. All those frames. And he draws the entire background on each of them. I don't think ADHD existed back then...

It's pretty fun to see a cartoon from before the rules of animating existed - bounce, easing, etc.

  • @Orteil42 OCD seems to have been alive and kicking...

  • Eat that, little foot.

  • The animation is still pretty impressive after almost 100 years.

  • @Guigley Smooth as MLP G4

  • @Weegeeisgoingtokillm brohoof!

Also, I saw a comment farther up mentioning how Gertie ate a rock and a tree, and all I could think was, "Tom! Fluttershy! Why must you be eaten?"

  • @kuledrumergie87 A wise pink pony once said "Fluttershy's not a tree, silly"

  • @Weegeeisgoingtokillm and a wise yellow pony once said, "I'd like to be a tree."

But then again, it took this wise pony over half a song to realize RD wanted a pet that could fly, so I'm not sure she's all that credible...

  • @kuledrumergie87 I wish I was a tree.

  • very nice animated movie. Gertie, would you be my pet, please?

  • When hack animators started making animated film series in the 20's, Windsor McCay called everything they were doing junk, and chided them for wasting a medium that could create beautiful art. Compared to this film, everything else WAS pretty crude at the time. Animators today recognize this as the first film to feature an animated character with a real personality.

  • @katinaanimator Yeah, leave it to money grubbing dopes in suits to ruin a perfectly good medium. Even back then

  • 4:25 Bad Gertie ! Dont throw aways the jumbos. Bad Gertie !

  • @Zblonk Don't say that. You'll make her cry.

  • In the original vaudeville version, McCay apparrently threw an apple to Gertie, which was changed to a pumpkin for this film. I don't understand why; it actually looks more like an apple.

  • @Minervasux Probably cause an apple that size would be one big ol' apple. :)

  • @Gername12 How dare I underestimate Gertie's size?

  • Wow, this is actually pretty impressive for 1914. The only flaw is that it was just animated with several sheets of paper, and only one drawing per sheet, which meant that the background was redrawn over and over and over, thus it appeared to be quite jittery. But that's okay; later cartoons weren't like that, thanks to the invention of cel animation.

  • Ladies and Gentleman, the worlds First original cartoon character.

    Gertie, the dinosaur.
